Any of you Guys go Pike Fishing?

Could this be the one you are thinking of?
I do have to admit that I am always rather careful when unhooking pike because I can see the size of their teeth and how close my fingers are to the teeth!

That's the very one! Thank you for finding it again! Did have it vaguely that I thought it was somewhere starting with M-...

I think I'm more worried about the gill rakers when I was shown how to chin them... 😅 Very powerful predators!

Anybody eat pike these days ?
on a few outings we will keep a few eater sized pike, there is a trick to filleting them to get that Y bone out, sometimes cook them in small cubes poached in butter or fried on the shore for a good lunch.
Like some others have noted, when reeling in a couple pound walleye I have had a monster pike slam them hard as they hit the surface and take off with my fish.

Beautiful markings on the original poster's pike!
Had a few pike on the fly over the years, even landed a few when the hook was right in the scissors. Lost a few when they were hooked accidentally, one sticks in the memory on the River Bladnoch a few years back - absolute beast of a fish.

I use my fly rod on the Lancaster canal. Think the biggest I have had was 3lb at best but gave a much better scrap than a comparatively sized trout. used to catch them and zander in lake Geneva when they wouldn’t take lures. Very fun.

That small one I posted was caught on a cheap spinner, I was after trout.

The same day that spinner snagged and pulled out a freshwater mussel, a first for me.

In my youth in Ireland l was constantly fishing the local canal that was at the bottom of the garden or the local lough.

The canal was crystal clear so l used to wait until l saw the shoals, mainly roach then fish for them.

The local petrol station owner used to cycle along the canal on his wife’s bike with a basket on the handlebars in which he carried his Churchill sxs shotgun, if he saw a big Pike a shot would ring out.

If l walked along the canal carefully l could see any Pike basking or laying in wait then try to catch them, the one that sticks in my mind was a monster (well to me it was), l was fishing with an old rod and bung float with live bait and dropped the bait in front of the Pike, it didn’t move until the live bait did then it struck took the bait and almost pulled me in, the local landowner was passing when l almost landed the fish and he began hitting the Pike with his stick, that’s when l lost the fish, bait and hook never did l see it again.

Some days later the Pike l hooked was found further down the canal, l wasn't around I’d come home to England, it was weighed and “supposedly“ came in at 54lbs, or is that a little bit of Irish blarney but my brother told me that information was true he was talking to the guy that found it.

A 30lb lure caught pike is a fish of a lifetime. I was for years a fanatical lure anger and I have a sizable collection of every conceivable form of lure. Custom built lure rods the works. My long time fishing partner was probably one of the best pike lure anglers and he was fanatical. We used to fish all the big trout waters but never has a biggy. My mate had a 29lb 14 oz at Llandegffed which produced and still holds the UK record.
My PB came from Cheddar reservoir not weighed but was a big twenty.
We used to catch a lot in the Cotswold water park when it was a wilderness. Now devoid of pike. Best day was at Reading on the Thames and canal I think we had 20+ mostly doubles odd one pushing 20.
If you want to try fly fishing for pike then the professional at Chew will provide lessons. Just be prepared to re mortgage your house.
Annual pike days at Chew are now mega money.
Fly fishing for pike can be very exciting but nothing compared to fishing big top waters in the spring in a clear reserviour.

There are some damned good fish shown here :)

I used to do a LOT of piking ... mainly lure fishing. AFAIK I still hold my old fishing club's record with a fish that weighed in at exactly 30lbs. My PB is a fish of 37lb 12oz taken on a home-made copper spoon from Pine Lake (Carnforth).
I used to design and make no end of my own lures and actually developed a surface lure that went into commercial production after some rigorous testing.

If your heart is strong enough, try fishing with big black surface lures after dark in Springtime ! Hells Bells it can be fun :)

Just out of interest do any of you guys go pi9ke fishing? I took it up last Autumn after Marlene came out of hospital just to get the odd couple of hours now and then out in the open air for some exercise. I only fish at a couple of local reservoirs where it is free fishing but I thoroughly enjoy myself when I am out with a rod in hand. I only fish with lures as it is just not my thing to sit and watch a bite detector or float for hours on end and in my opinion it means that it is me pitting my brains against the top British freshwater predator. I have landed plenty of small "jacks" up to around the 6 pound mark and I have had a few good "doubles". However today was a bit different - The weather was reasonable and Marlene suggested that I went out and took advantage of the reasonable weather and did a bit of fishing = That was an offer I could not refuse!
I went to my local reservoir, set up my heavy lure rod and on just my second cast I latched into this big girl! She measured 113cm in length and had a very large girth on her. Another Pike angler came and helped take a few photos and estimated her as "pushing well into the 30lb mark! I am sheet at estimating the weight of fish so I will just take his word for it = Even so whatever the weight she was well worth catching!
So what's your PB?

That is the prettiest pike I have ever seen - the markings are absolutely stunning! Well done Frenchie!
Sadly the same may not necessarily be said for the “old trout” also in the picture…..

my biggest is 30lb 12oz, caught on a roach livebait.
lure fishing was my thing for a few years and i enjoyed chucking a 4-5 ounce lure around the tidal trent where
my biiggest was 22lb. used a dave lumb one piece 6ft6 rod 100lb braid and an ABU multiplier.
after i caught the big one i lost all interest, it was very weird..suppose i realised it was the biggest i would ever catch,
picked up my gun again and never went back, still got all the pike gear though.

Understand that. Fly fishing years ago caught a rainbow at seven pounds and four ounces, which at the time was ( massive??). Shooting woodies over decoys, my mate came to my hide and asked how've you got on. I'm not going until I've shot the ton, I had + 90 down. After that I never went fly fishing or decoyed pigeons again. Funny job this shooting lark, don't you think 🤔🤔

You never know sich1, if you pick the rods up again and go searching you may catch another fish of a lifetime... your 30lb 12oz is a fish of dreams
I found a special pike water completely by chance, I was fishing it for another species, realized I was fishing a place that could do something great, long story short I caught a 33lb fish and just thought I had caught the biggest in the lake, after all a 30lb pike is the fish of a lifetime... how wrong I was...

that happened to me too, i joined well known local club that had a few lakes that were match fished on a regular basis. i tried a lure in 1 of them and started to catch fish in the 15-24 range on
a regular basis. all young clean fish that had never been caught before as no one else fished the lake for pike. they had been feeding on the small carp that were in the lake and had got to a good size on them. i would fish through the winter and worked out they fed for 2 hours just after mid day (the warmest part) i would spray the area with maggots to pull in the feed fish and fish a livebait just on the edge of a shelf, worked great for me. the 30 was a young fish, unmarked and pristine...you could fit a jack russel down is neck...lol
your a bad man, i just picked up my lure rod. i had forgotten how nice and balanced it felt. love the LH wind ABU multipliers

I used to pike fish a lot, I’ve been away from it for 15 years but getting back into it as the kids are bigger!

Lure fishing is my favourite! Had piles of 20s over the years upto 36lb nearly all on lures.
