Please see the following article in Shooting Times which hopefully helps give some added context on the recently launched BASC deer stalkers register.

BASC members interested in signing up can do so via the link below.

Conor,

There have been a few posts concerning the validity of the DMQ Awards vs the PDS (LANTRA) accredited alternatives. There are genuine concerns going forward that if it is true and DMQ has not been able to secure an Educational Award Body status, where does that leave DMQ holders if certain organisations (FC/FLS) are swayed by the LANTRA alternatives and insist on these as a preferred qualification. No Government instrument ever has any loyalty, and is easily swayed with the promise of preferential treatment or 'lobbying'.

As opposed to further pushing the Register (which should be without question a joint register with all other organisations) someone from BASC/DMQ needs to very quickly address the concerns being raised on this forum about the DMQ status going forward. This is not something to advise people to contact DMQ about, because we are all aware DMQ and BASC are the same entity, given BASC staff admin on behalf of DMQ.

Thank you.

The only people who appear to be concerned are those who don't have the required qualifications to join the list. That's not the problem of BASC or DMQ.
The insurance thing has been done to death with people claiming to be happy with their £2.99 insurance packages and yet now they want BASC membership benefits for a £2.99 price tag. Sorry chaps but the world doesn't work like that!

Yeh that’s not true though.

The main concern as far as I’m concerned is the system of encouraging the exclusive use of paid up “ qualified stalkers “

The next step is the use of professionals only and a further degradation of recreational stalking.

It’s already under attack in Scotland from the sitting government and programs like this will only make that worse.

Plenty folk with the required qualifications still don’t want to be required to be on an approved list.

I have always been an advocate of deer stalkers being qualified to at least level one anyway. Foot and Mouth or Blue tongue takes no prisoners.

Whereas I see no need for it.
People have been hunting a very long time with only learned experiences to make them good at it.
No paper required.

If I could help advise I would but firstly I don't know the ins and outs of this, secondly this is a thread about further context published in Shooting Times about the BASC deer register, and thirdly I think this is really a matter for you to raise yourself with DMQ. You would be best emailing admin@dmq.org.uk outlining the details of your query/concerns.

I don’t think panties need twisting, Conor mentioned 12 landowners asking for stalkers in a year, so BASC members get to be on a recommendation list, ………… I am sure other organisations will do the same for their members if it’s successful

I get that completely but recreational stalking in areas of high density population of deer is not having the management effect, a few beast taken off an area per year has no impact whatsoever. Surely by having more stalkers on the ground, all recreational then the targets would be met, more meat in freezers of individual stalkers, happy landowners.
because recreational stalkers are often over looked because they dont have the jumped up qualifications! fact. if they are overlooked they cannot cull in high density areas

“This is a free service for any member who has achieved the DCS1 and DCS2 qualifications. Your membership proves to landowners that you have a rock-solid insurance policy,” he points out. “Your qualifications prove to landowners that you have achieved industry-standard levels of firearms and deer knowledge, and can safely and humanely cull deer on their land and put them into the food chain.

For each shot taken the shooter takes full responsibility for their action and any insurance is secondary to that. If you are negligent, the insurance will not necessarily cover it. Does the register offer some kind of all risk rock solid cover as you suggest?
The register is for BASC members and BASC members are covered by BASC's insurance policy. Are you a BASC member?
