6.5 Creedmoor

Afternoon. I am sure it’s been asked before but I can’t find it. So here I go AGAIN
what is the best hunting load for 6.5 Creedmoor?
I looked at 143 ELD-X and according to looks like the fastest it will fly with any RS powder is 2650ish. Is this the desired speed for 6.5CM or do I need to chase 2800ish?

There are a number of factors influencing muzzle velocity . Work up some loads of your own , chronograph them you often end up with different results to published data and other shooters . Check hornady data they may suggest a minimum mv to ensure expansion for a humane kill I doubt the deer you shoot will know if the bullet was travelling at 2600 or 2800 fps . Tune yourself a good load ,accurate shot placement is what counts more than anything else anyway .

I shoot factory 143gr at 2550 and home loads at 2740 (using RS60).

Both kill - sika, red and fallow. The slower load will produce a few more runners, but I have yet to lose one. The advantage is that it’s just about perfect for roe. So I switch between them depending on what I’m most likely to meet.

What barrel length?
Cause according to RS’s web RS60 only yield 2630……

good evening everyone, speaking of the 143 Eldx, I purchased a box and for fun I weighed them one by one and I found that there is a significant gap and many fluctuate from 142.1 to 143.2, do you think it could influence the yield?

If you where going for benchrest accuracy I suppose it may but at common sensible hunting ranges 50 to 300 yards .with good shot placement I wouldn't think the deer would notice much of a difference .

Just as likely to be measurement error.

Not worth worrying about.

I’m using 112 yew tree bullets with vit150. 2880 fps deadly accurate and drop the deer on the spot with little damage
Roe sika and red

In my 6.5 CM rifle with 24" barrel these average velocities all achieve the same effect, dead deer, with the same zero: ELDM 147gr 2444fps, 6.5 ELDX 143gr 2638fps and ELDM 140gr 2644fps. ELDX is marginally more brutal with respect to potential meat damage. Have only shot Roe with these but I'm not hesitating to take it with me for Sika next weekend.

Ok so I have taken a slightly different route. FWIW

24" barrel

123gr @ 3000fps

The reason I did this was

a) mv is more important than bc at short range ie all deer stalking ranges.
b) if i change go a copper bullet it is more likely to be ~120gr than ~140gr
c) if i go copper then impact velocity is critical. 123@3000 ~2450 at 300 143 @2750 ~ 2330.

Not sure there is a lot in it. Either of those impact velocities will give full (?) expansion.

It's a 6.5 modern bullet so bc is pretty good anyway. Wind drift isn't going to be hugely different one way or another.

I shoot this on Sika all the time and they fall over just fine.

Shot placement is the key as confirmed by the above post a sensible load shot sensibly within sensible hunting ranges is more than sufficient I've never seen or heard of anyone dressing a deer and coming across an organic doppler radar .

You are stating the obvious, something I would hope everyone on this site knows.
However my OP was not about shot placement it was about reloading recopies.
Although your statement are true and valued it’s not what I was asking for

OK well didn't appear that you had such a vast amount of knowledge given your post Am sure that you ll glean more than enough from everyone else . Reloading recipe s are trial and error 2 exact same rifles of the same make may differ on a sweet spot . Play with it enjoy it keep your results. .Handloading is a pleasure in itself find what works for you Good luck

Thanks for all your words of wisdom. I am definitely not that guy that says he can’t learn from someone else. I have been reloading since I was a young boy with my father and consider my self experienced enough to work up a load quit sufficiently as well as safely, as I have done with my other 9 calibers.
However, I have learned in the past that by asking a question that might make you look inexperienced and learning from the comments/possible mistakes from others might shorten the route to a recipe for a new calibre. It’s also far easier and cheaper than ignorance…..
