Quick release mounts?

Is there an option for quick release mounts on a dovetail like the sako 75?
Toying with the idea of taking the rifle abroad with me in the next couple of years,(had mixed experiences with borrowed rifles). But I’ve got a feeling it’s not possible with this rifle setup. I’ve seen them on the blaser and it’s amazing taking the rifle and scope out of a carry box, putting everything together with no loss of zero.

Need a picatinny rail or similar?

depending on where you are going, you could always re zero when you get there?

alternatively just buy a larger rifle case and leave it assembled?

the real benefit with the Blaser is the removable barrel when it comes to reducing size.

As you know you/they get a chance to check your shooting and if the scope is on, I took my z6 off the rail (in 6 yrs) as one rail screw was loose so re checked them. put it back and it was only one click out. Save the cost and drama just take it off pack it well and take a few more rounds. KISS is the answer.

I’m not sure I’d trust a Picatinny rail/ring combination to return to zero.

Recknagel may possibly do a base / ring combination which uses their ‘repeatable’ system, that goes on a Sako action. Not a cheap option.

You can get a Britannia picatinny rail and then you have a lot of options for rings that fit a picatinny/weaver base.
The downside to it could be that your scope height is higher but you could compensate for this by using lower height rings.

Rather than taking scope off what about just removing the stock. Makes the whole package a lot shorter.

And as others have said, its always a good idea to take a test shot or three after travelling a good distance to a far flung destination.

Cheers folks! I’ll reply individually when I can,(out at the moment).

Scope height is a concern because that’s already a pain. Looking at a cheek riser for that.

Can you get cases where whole, rifle , stock , scope go in as one piece and travel as they are? Or is this impractical?

Definitely will be checking zero regardless. Not assuming anything after travel!

You can definitely get cases to meet those requirement. Probably look at the Napier double gun case as a starter. Has double combination locks and key locks as well.

Yes but an overseas trip would have you check both a swing off/on or tighten up 2 cross bolts on the rail either way there will be a check. Also it is a good chance for the guide to check you out (which they do) as you could well be behind them with the rifle.
When I have been scoring on charity clay days I watch the next oik with a brand new gun wanting to load it as they are coming fwd as the other one is leaving.

I have 2 sako 75’s one in 243 and one in 6.5x55.
Both have britannia rails on top.
They live in the cabinet without scopes attached.

The .243 is used for roe with a zeiss v4 coupled with warne rings.

At night i use the same rifle with a thermion also fitted with warne rings.

Shot a fox at 245m on wednesday evening, the thermion was clicked on the rifle only an hour earlier.
Picatinny works for me.
Just always make sure the locating lug is pushed forward up against picatinny slot.

You don't necessarily need a Picatinny rail, here are a couple of alternatives:

If you do go with a Picatinny/Weaver rail then there are tonnes of "return to zero" qr/qd rings. I have a Warne set that I love.

I think you are concearned about something you need not worry about. In order to go on an airline your rifle MUST be in a lockable, metal case. All the ones I have seen are plenty large enough for your rifle with scope fitted. I took my Sako 75 in 30-06 to Africa in a case with scope fitted, small binos, two knives, etc, without any trouble. I thought I would have to re-zero on arrival in the Limpopo, but it was still spot on.

you can definitely get full size cases. the only problem i have noticed is that those type of cases do not fit well into normal vehicles.
Exactly ! A big Peli 1720 is a bugger to get into something, anything. I bought a Peli 3220 a couple of years ago. Action out of the stock and pack away. Fit a few more things in, clobber, bins etc.
On arrival if doing driven boar an inch or two out is not going to be of significant difference. In Africa sure you want it spot on. In my experience there has never been a significant change in POI.

Thanks folks. I hadn’t realised a full size case is significantly bigger / cumbersome compared to a full rifle say in a slip which easily fits into a car. Worth knowing.

Stock off may help. I think I’d want to do this a few times to make sure everything was repeatable on my part,(above checking zero). Should you be worrying about torque on screws in these instances?

The leupold releases seem like a good option. I’ll have a look and see if they require different optilocks.

Thanks!

Can I ask what case you used? Did you take the rifle apart,(be it scope or stock?) or send it as one piece?

I was just going to post the Leupold QR bases, they’re generally very well regarded.

These sound like just what I’m after, do they need different optilocks as well?
