Parker Hale Bronze Brush PB30 won't fit

Hello,

I'm trying to break in the barrel of a new rifle in .30.06 caliber. Bought a Parker Hale bore rod with PB 30 Brush. I told the shop .30 cal and thats what they gave me.

When I try to put it down the barrel it is very tight and barely moves without lots of force. I put it a ways in and the give it a hell of a pull to get it out.... Obviously does not feel right.

Any clue what I'm doing wrong here? I was thinking it maybe for a different caliber.


What I did instead was just put a patch down after each shot with some youngs 303 solvent on it and then a couple dry patches after.

I thought so... so I did try a 2nd time. The 2nd time it went further with some force but getting it out wash such a pull I think when it finally popped out with force it nicked the metal where the cartridge ejects from....no big deal but I was worrying if that happened further down in the chamber or barrel.

is it necessary to use this brush during break in? or would a solvent patch+ dry patch on the jag be fine?
 
I have never broken in a rifle in my life. But if using a P-Hale bronze I have always used a good gun oil (or Young's .303 or A J Parker's "AC oil") with which I always well lubricate the thing. The only time I'd use it dry is when using it in a rusted barrel as a dry brush removes dry rust better.

Ahh I see... thats what I did wrong then
 
The brush will ( should be) be a tight fit. Once you start pushing the brush down the barrell you have to keep going until it exits the barrel.
Never try to pull out the brush in reverse once its in the barrel. It will be MEGA tight if not virtually impossible.

Because the brush is slightly larger than the bore you are flexing the wire bristles backwards as you push the rod in, if you change direction within the barrel you will bend the wires out of shape and very prematurely wear the brush.
 
I was always told to disconnected the brush and pull the rod back through on its own to prevent any damage or wear to the crown?
Also never go in dry, oooerrr missus!
 
I do exactly as graphictart does. it does take longer but any potential crown damage does not happen.
The crown stays nice and sharp.
Always go the direction of the bullet travel!!

I know a lot of shooters may disagree with this but it will not do any harm to do it this way.
On the label of some rifle cleaning products they recommend this way to clean the barrel.

Yes, bought from reloading solutions. Its the one piece white plastic type. Rifle and calibre specific . Its only about £20 .
I think its best to try to kept cleaning fluids and brushs out of the chamber.
