Partners to be quizzed in new gun licence screening

Luckily I don't have one of those "Gun Licence" thingies that the media keep drivelling on about, just an FAC.

Note to self: Check whether my "Google Box Watching Permit" has expired, or if my "Use A Wheely Thingy on the Road" certificate bears my correct address.

"Almost half (45%) of all adult female homicide victims were killed in a domestic homicide (70). Of these 70 female victims, all but one were killed by a male suspect"

Unfortunately the stats speak for themselves.

The police aren't suggesting that men who legally own firearms will kill their partners (some have done) but they wouldn't be doing their due diligence if they didn't at least ask the partners of fac/SGC holders some questions. The questions are the routine questions the police ask any "victim" of domestic abuse because some of them (like hurting animals, being cruel not humanely killing them) are indicators to severe behaviour disorders and almost always a precursor to domestic violence to both partners and children.

The only people being woke on this thread are those who feel victimised because they don't appreciate how actual victims feel and are treated.

What method was used in the killing?

I'd imagine a licensed "weapon" to feature very low on the list.
No, but when a licensed firearm is used I guess the issuing police force have to refer themselves to there governing body for review/scrutiny.

If Mrs X is spoken to at time of issue of certificate and is happy then they have covered their arse a bit more.

Indeed, I suppose my angle is the good old if 70% of the domestic killings involve a knife, 20% involve a blunt instrument, 9.9999% involve strangulation, and 0.00001% are as a result of a legally held shotgun/firearm then a risk based approach suggests firearms to not really be the issue requiring most attention.

I don't really have an issue with them speaking to a current partner, speaking to a previous one would be more of a concern for many who have split up with a vindictive nutjob!

You would think that FLDs would be trying to do the work they have already, without adding more to it, and increasing existing delays....

I should say this is part of what they're already supposed to be doing.
The job of a Firearms Enquiry Office is to make enquiries into an applicant's situation to determine whether it's appropriate for them to be issued with a certificate. So nothing new going forward, just a slightly different format.

I think in any case partners come into the equation. And so they should. I've no problems with that. As for vindictive ex-wives/partners, well that has always caused problems. Making up a form for them to fill in? Hmmm. Do I detect an inspector looking for examples to use in the next promotion process? I'll let you judge that.

I think that there is a more pressing problem though when thinking about the number of murders/homicides that we are seeing in the news these days on a daily basis. Knife usage! However that is a much more thorny issue. It involves ethnic minorities and their values amongst other things. It means increasing stop/searches, where the tightening up of legislation for them is certainly making police officers think twice about doing them and incurring the wrath of community leaders/representatives/senior management. Yes, something that's worthwhile and if someone is able to get to grips with that, I'd be all for them being promoted.

...I'm kind of surprised they don't do this already. After all they speak to our doctors so why not our wives/husbands?

When I moved to this house over 12 years ago the FEO came to the house to do his checks .After he left he phoned my wife to ask if our marriage was ok.On two subsequent renewals he has asked same questipn in my presence .I dont have a problem with that

Tvp are not doing this
Haven't had a home visit for years but when I did the wife was always included in the conversation prior to checking security and serial numbers etc.
Make no mistake, the "friendly" chat would have been a litmus test for her attitude towards firearms in the house. Fortunately as a professional keeper, she knew what she was getting into when we married 40 years ago 😂

Yeah, I mean if they abolished all the checks and just made it so you could buy your FAC at the post office it would be much quicker....

Yes, I know they are. When I had my initial grant interview a couple of years ago, the question was asked of others in the house.

As that is currently the case in some forces, why are these forces having to do a check list of questions now? Is it because they weren't doing it previously? It couldn't possibly be anything to do with the(lack) training of FEOs, could it? After all, the Plymouth inquiry showed up that the FLD wasn't getting the resources/training it should have been getting. I'm not against the initiative, as long as the FLDs get the job done in a timely manner.
