Out last night.

Took the .22lr out last night looking for a few rabbits. This farm doesn't have great numbers and I would have been happy with half a dozen.
I decided to protect the winter wheat/barley fields before they get too long. Odd rabbit dotted here and there, I just mopped them up as I went and ended up with 18 which I just left for the local wary fox which I also saw but she was off as per usual.
Also saw a dozen roe and loads of our prickly friends 😁20240409_223710.webp20240409_225133.webp

Lot of grub for a fox!! Have you no outlet at all for rabbit?? Pity people rather eat shite from Iceland these days ☹️
I usually give them to a keeper I know for his traps but last night was easier to feed the fox , it's a sly one but will catch up with it eventually. Plus I couldn't be bothered to carry them last night 🤣

Another three last night !! I’m amazed they just keep coming. I went out at dusk got one straight away and the other two not long after the stayed out till 1am trying to get another 2 I saw but just couldn’t get close enough. Out of frustration took a 300 yard shot which made it jump in the air 😢😂

I think I saw the first cub above ground last night, not far from a local earth, looked a bit big though. I usually get at least three from that earth, but this one was on his/her own.

Two last night, bumped into one at 25 yards, long shot at an distinctly uninterested fox at 220 yards, and annoyingly fluffed a freehand shot at 50 yards for another i bumped into on way back to car and thought I’d freehand it. I blame being too excited!
Finished lambing, but fields full of lambs.
Despite the two, I’m p’d off at the miss. In fact missing that one really annoyed me - it annoyed me all the way home, and then annoyed me until I fell asleep, and is annoying me nowIMG_7868.jpeg

Farmer messaged last week that there'd been a fox under the hen house in the middle of the day so I've had a camera up and been chucking some bait down. Started to come in regular over the last few nights between 2100 and 2200 so stake-out last night and no show :( A bloody cat had a good clear up of the bait while i was there though... It's a tricky spot to shoot as the prevailing wind is always in the wrong direction and the land slopes away on all sides. My previous preferred spot on top of the bales is now long gone - eaten by the cattle - so I do suspect I was winded last night which is why it didn't show. Give it another couple of days and try and get creative with my ambush spot!

Could you gradually move the bait further away to a more suitable spot, place it a bit further each day.

Just one of those spots where it slopes away in every direction. I have got a highseat up but I've never shot a fox from it as the only tree suitable is directly upwind of where they normally approach from. Going to have another check later though to see if I can get it coming to better spot (I've been around this loop so many times   )

I have a similar issue on a place I go. Pain in the arse it is....

I was sidetracked last night, Ewe obviously in difficulties, lambs head emerged but obstruction (one leg forward I think), gave the farmer the heads up, he and his lad came up on the mule & did the tug O' war thing, twins extracted & all re-sussed, amazing how tough sheep can be, I thought the first one was a goner but all good in the end.

I know the feeling, exactly same in my hotspot.
Only thing that can’t dictate which way to shoot from is me.

Unfortunately not the same outcome for me, was leaving the farm last week after a morning walk about and when I drove through the yard I could see a ewe very much in distress in the lambing shed.
Knocked on the door and spoke to the farmer’s wife who knew about the ewe but hubby was laid up ill in bed, this was midday and the farmhand wouldn’t be arriving until gone 5pm.
I suggested that I could shoot it so she asked her husband and he agreed. When I went to look half of its guts had spilled out of its back end and it was suffering a very slow horrible death. Dragged it out into the yard and shot it. ☹️
