Rust on bolt shroud.

Hi guys hope all is well, I’m buying a used custom rifle and just got sent through a lot of close pics and noticed what looks like rust on the bolt shroud, should I be worried?
It’s a Remington 700 action and I looked around to see if I could get a new shroud and I can’t find anywhere that sells just the shroud.
What do u think?
Thanks so much.

It’s going to be my main work rifle so I’m not fussed if it dosent look pretty,
as long as it dosent affect the performance.

The barrel on it is pristine that’s why I was surprised with the shroud, there’s no rust on the action or on the bolt either surprisingly enough. I’m guessing it’s been built off an old action

I’d be more worried about how far back the bolt handle is in its slot and if you have any primary extraction left

I double checked definitely 700, it was built by Steve Kershaw

Ahh, bolt handle had me fooled!

Yes, likely an old remy action rebarrelled and looks like dropped into a McMillan stock - if built by Steve, it should be a cracking rifle! Bolt shrouds are cheap and easy to replace if the rust/pitting bothers, but it’s just an eye thing.

aye its in a mcmillan stock it looks lovely the only fault i could find was the shroud and some slight scratches on the barrle but the fluting on the barrle is so deep it was no surprise.

The exterior condition of the shroud is cosmetic

The internal bearing surfaces condition would be the prime concern as would be the bolt timing for secondary extraction

These areas will affect accuracy which are often overlooked by the unwary and course extraction - whilst a cheap part purchase to replace the bolt handle it can be an absolute dog to get the timing correct on some Remington actions

Caveat Emptor

I purchased a new shroud/firing pin assembly for mine to get rid of the old j-lock. About £100 from Brownells if I recall. Not exactly cheap but the new one was markedly better quality (I’m trying to remember the make).

Edit - this is it:

Call to order meant I had to send them a scan of my FAC. Once I’d done that, they just posted it.

Thanks so much for the help every one, it’s been great, I’ll definetly be buying the rifle and I think in the next few months I’ll be buying the firing pin assembuly and shroud just to be safe, thanks again.

Do check what Dasherman said about primary extraction, that bolt handle should be resting against the forward bolt handle inlet. Just looking at mine and it’s flush. Perhaps the bolt shroud isn’t original - which might explain the rust. I doubt Steve fitted that barrel as well, it looks like more of a factory fluted job. You can always get the Sn. And check with Steve Kershaw if he has any records of what he did - perhaps he just bedded it into the macmillan

Get the thing blasted and Ceracoated , its worth it . Ok extreme but it is very much better

Exterior perhaps but not internal surfaces

Coating causes drag and intermittent strike force on primer leading to ignition issues and accuracy problems
