It nice to get some recognition for all the hard and sometimes difficult work the Hampshire HAD team do.
I know that some other constabularies are speaking the the officer that runs and owns the HAD scheme with a view to taking it on in there own areas but there’s still a little
work to be done with a new HAD course which will be up and running soon.
Here’s what the constabulary wrote about our HAD team
Well done to the whole team
Our fantastic Humane Animal Dispatch (HAD) volunteers have been given the Police Support Volunteer Team of the Year award at our annual Citizens in Policing Awards ceremony.
Six of our Mounted Rural Patrol volunteers also attended the ceremony where they received their long service certificate.
The ceremony was held on Friday 26 April.
HADs are called out by the force control room 24/7, 365 days a year, to reports of injured deer which have been involved in collisions on Hampshire's roads.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary recognise their responsibilities, accountabilities and the importance of animal welfare under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Deploying a HAD volunteer means we are not allowing an animal to suffer unnecessarily. Dispatch of the animal is completed as effectively and humanely as possible.
These volunteers are all experts in the field of deer management; having the right resource at the right situation gives confidence to both the police and public.
Between January and September 2023, 75 deer dispatches were carried out across Hampshire by our volunteers. This has saved the Constabulary a considerable amount of time and resources.
Additionally, our volunteers have given up extra time this year to complete an online training package and scenario based assessment sessions to ensure the safety of everyone at the scene. This has resulted in better communication, understanding and cooperation between the scheme, control room and other agencies such as Forestry England and Highways.
