Nice to get a little Recognition

It nice to get some recognition for all the hard and sometimes difficult work the Hampshire HAD team do.

I know that some other constabularies are speaking the the officer that runs and owns the HAD scheme with a view to taking it on in there own areas but there’s still a little
work to be done with a new HAD course which will be up and running soon.

Here’s what the constabulary wrote about our HAD team
Well done to the whole team
Our fantastic Humane Animal Dispatch (HAD) volunteers have been given the Police Support Volunteer Team of the Year award at our annual Citizens in Policing Awards ceremony.

Six of our Mounted Rural Patrol volunteers also attended the ceremony where they received their long service certificate.

The ceremony was held on Friday 26 April.

HADs are called out by the force control room 24/7, 365 days a year, to reports of injured deer which have been involved in collisions on Hampshire's roads.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary recognise their responsibilities, accountabilities and the importance of animal welfare under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Deploying a HAD volunteer means we are not allowing an animal to suffer unnecessarily. Dispatch of the animal is completed as effectively and humanely as possible.

These volunteers are all experts in the field of deer management; having the right resource at the right situation gives confidence to both the police and public.

Between January and September 2023, 75 deer dispatches were carried out across Hampshire by our volunteers. This has saved the Constabulary a considerable amount of time and resources.

Additionally, our volunteers have given up extra time this year to complete an online training package and scenario based assessment sessions to ensure the safety of everyone at the scene. This has resulted in better communication, understanding and cooperation between the scheme, control room and other agencies such as Forestry England and Highways.

I was invited to an interview with the Wiltshire Chief Constable to thank me for the HAD work I have carried out over the years.
I told them I was happy to do the job and did not need a slap on the back for doing it so did not take up the invitation.

Thanks Ed,
The chief constable never asked me when I was part of there scheme and I was in it from the start, I haven't done one for a while over there, the last one was on the road between Tidworth and Bulford but not likely to now anyway as its not run by the constabulary anymore.

Nice to see that the good work carried out by the Hampshire scheme volunteers is appreciated, they certainly have their work cut out for them. While I've noticed an increase in deer collisions local to home in Monmouthshire over the last two years the problem is certainly not any where near as bad as you have in the counties of Hampshire and Wiltshire.

My wife and I have travelled through Hampshire several times in the last six months and have been shocked by the number of dead deer that we have seen at the side of the road. On one trip between Andover and Romsey we counted 5 deer, mostly roe but one muntjac also. On the return journey by a slightly different route we counted four dead deer.
Then last week we travelled from Southampton up through Salisbury again via the "quieter" country roads and saw another four road casualties, on this occasion it was two fallow, one roe and one muntjac.

Not wanting to detract from the good work the HAD guys do & the recognition they rightly got but it would be nice if Hampshire Police put similar effort into processing renewals… 😡

Not wishing to stir the pot at all....

Picked mine up last night from tower street.

Less than a week since I put the paperwork in all back and correct - and they've given me a temporary hold for a rifle I have that is going back within the month and a new slot for rifle and mod of same calibre.

That is taking the proverbial!!

That is the sort of turnaround I had on my previous two renewals.

This time round I had to ask for the 8 week extension letters the week before my certificates expired. The extensions are also about to expire so all my kit is off to an RFD for storage, the cost of which will be passed to Hampshire Police.
