Is there a max bullet weight you'd try in a 223 1:8 twist

May I ask what seating depths you've tried? Think I'm at a 80thou jump with good results
Depth of seating changes with use and i have personally never found any bullet perform really noticeably better or worse ( unless you go way too short or are getting well into contact ) in a hunting rifle . Precision BR ? yeah tweaking the length with coke can manufactured washers in the die
The Rifling is always changing in use and if your not into using high end bench rest bullets ... You will find small batch differences ! Small changes yes but not anything truly useable in general terms in the field . In a paper punching BR comp sure but then the rifling is always eroding away , so its not static .
The TTSX are imo just too long to work to the highest degree in a 1-12

I hear what your saying bud with barrel life/erosion etc just wondered if you'd played with varying depths. When I made up a load i didn't believe the "like a long jump" and wasted alot of consumables until I found the 80 thou spot but yes they're a long bullet and the 1:12 suffers.

Cheers for the info 👍

80 grain SMK's, using Wild Boar or RS52 powder, did it for me in a 760mm 8 twist barrel.
The SMK's made it to 1000yds easily, but the wind can be difficult, to say the least....

Ha ha I bet, I'm keen to try 600yrds.

Have just ordered some 75gr HPBT to start with and see how they go.

And the 73grain Berger HPBT Match are great fun at 300 yds......I load mine to give an MV of around 890m/s. (Wild Boar, BR4 primers )

What made you decide on those particular bullets ?
A few things,

They're cheap so if my rifle doesn't like them, I won't cry when giving them away.

They're heavy and supposed to be match quality so if they don't work then I'm going to say that weight may not be for my rifle.

I wanted to get slightly lighter but they were out of stock so went for a bit of a gamble.

And because they were cheap 🤣

Went for these.
Have used PPU before and had no concerns.

Hmmm.
Be aware of bullet design - some bullets have a longer or shorter bearing surface i.e. the but in contact with the rifling - my triple deuce shoots 50gns and 55gns really well but same bullet in 52gns is a blunderbuss!

my tikka tac a1 223 1in8 puts the 75gr ppu into 8 " holes at 100yards and put the sierra 69gr match bullet into .6 on an inch at 100 yards i wont be buying the ppu bullets again.

Do you recall any of the load details.. Though it sounds like I should avoid them 😉

Consider the shape at 90 grain you’re going to face seating deeper to cycle from the mag with many rifles or your seating into the rifling .
Duff has forgotten more about loading and shooting than you’ve ever known about shooting or knife making combined. So I wouldn’t be questioning anything he has to say on the matter….
