I was told deer damage but I don’t think so

Hi guys
I was asked to inspect a plantation and told they have lost 75% of the trees to deer. Threats of bringing in contractors were made…. To be clear there are some deer and some grazing damage but sheep have been getting in as I have been saying for a year or so….. anyway on inspection there were lots of dead trees which seemed to have just died without any grazing pressure. It almost looked like the grass weed killer spray had killed the trees??? I dunno but not deer as the trees were complete. What’s killing the trees???

We had very similar a couple of years ago on a lease we had in the borders fcs tried to blame deer damage we argued with them turned out tree had not been treated as they should have been before delivery hence they were dyeing contractors had to re plant hope this helps Harry 243:british:

Definitely not deer species mate, I would be contacting the land owner to find out who the contractors are what an when was sprayed, the ground around the tree looks chemically killed.

Good luck.

So I’ve finally lined up a meeting with the agent I said onsite please let’s see what he says so far he’s been swallowing the Scottish woodland advice that it all down to deer!!! Hopefully he has enough common sense to see what’s in front of him….

The stem damage in the image appears to be longitudinal, up the stem. Weevil damage is different...lots of divets which may girdle the tree killing it. From a single image it is impossible to call what has killed that tree but unless the stem is 'girdled' right round the tree should have survived so maybe an overspray with glyphosate , which is OK at the correct dose when the tree is dormant and will kill surrounding grasses....but if here is life in the buds of the tree, there is a risk yhe tree will actively absorb chemical and game over.

I’ll report after the meeting in the morning but thank you for this :)

So quite a good meeting really. The factor was surprised how much other damage was occurring as he was told mainly deer but overspray and natural mortality were all present in significant numbers. SW were ok to and accepted there were numerous reasons for trees dying. Also I think we have agreed better communication protocols and I think I should be getting a management lease in future for the deer control on my terms…. Anyway we shall see…. Thanks for all the help it was valuable insights

Long time ago now. I said there were low deer numbers and Scottish woodland commissioned a nighttime thermal drone survey. 30 hours of flying at night they saw one deer!! Estates still bumped me off the lease as they wanted to have a chain of command ie if SW complain about deer it was there problem not the estates (I was on a lease with the estates). I was promised to be on the new lease with SW but it never happened. Shambles. I have the rest of the estate on a separate lease now plenty of land and no pressure to shoot anything so I don’t go up much now and run it as a syndicate.
