.270 factory loads for woodland work

When I used a .270, I found it hard to find a round that didn’t work. The trick was avoiding the ones that made a bit too much of a mess on smaller deer.

Bog standard Federal 130gr Powershok was good, maybe a touch soft so it could make quite a mess at short range. Norma 130gr was expensive but harder.
Ahh a nice short focused reply .Thank you Mungo .

.270 in 130 grain was the standard calibre/weight for most Districts when I was in the FC in the early 90s. It seemed very adequate for shorter range forestry work and longer open hill shots on all species.

Back then - pre moderators it was a bit rough, have used one since with a mod and it's a gem

When I had one (and hopefully will have another soon) I used 150gr to good effect.

It doesn’t give the great velocities of the 130gr, but is a bit kinder to the carcass and still very effective.

I hated 270’s and had a couple through the years and called them bazookas and always preferred a 243 but I was made to use a 270 for a sideline . Took me a while to get used to the kick but it knocks everything down espeacially out on open hill and woodland so don’t have any doubts about there capability . As to the shooting anything close to trees I’ve got a speacial attachment for my rifle which works after I’ve pinged it… then I click my fingers and say “ where is it “😁🐶not many get away from a 270 .

Out of curiousity, what was the rifle/stock and was it moderated for you to find it akin to a bazooka?

The recoil of a 270 is similar to, or less than, the recoil of a 308, but you don't hear people complaining about that. It's just prejudice.

Wasn’t moderated , it was a Mannlicher Luxus or something like that so between the noise and kick I went right off it but I now use a Sauer with a DPT and use it more than the 243 . 👍
I had a Mannlicher Luxus in .308. It was an evil, evil thing that beat the sh*t out of me.

I changed it for a Heym, still unmoderated, and it was a complete transformation. Could shoot it without losing sight picture.

Can't remember my mentors bullet weights in his 270 but the noise was party to my hearing loss at that time, never liked them since. Moderators have since been available of course still steer clear of 270s though?

BC.

Any centrefire rifle (or shotgun) would have been responsible your hearing loss if you weren't using ear protection. It's not a phenomenon specific to the 270.

My mate that shoots with me uses a 308 at night work , a T3 and it was a dream to shoot , same as my 243 nearly , but I stuck with the 270 for distance . Nearly did go for the 308 .

Same with me😁👌if I didn’t hold on to for dear life it would jump , I couldn’t just have my hand round onto the trigger and my arm below the butt and pull the trigger as I would be facing a different direction once it was over 😁👍total game changer with the Sauer , I never hold up front unless at an angle .

Sounds like a factor of poor design rather than calibre.
I don't find my unmoderated 270 at all unpleasant to shoot but then, being a Parker-Hale, it is the pinnacle of true British craftsmanship 🤣🤣🤣

You’ll be mentioned in the Kings Honours List next year for Devotion To Parker Hale 😁

If your after meat, a 150 grain something, if you need it to bang flop, a 130 grain Nosler Partition should do the trick. It won’t be pretty though.

Not exactly what you are asking but I have hand loaded 140grain Sierra tipped game changers to around 2600 fps for closer range hunts. Groups under an inch at 100m. I have a sample size of one Roe but it did the job with authority. Hopefully the next few months will give me more opportunity for testing. Good luck finding a slower factory offering.

It's funny how ones experience of any calibre can be blighted by poor stock design or in my case at both my first workplaces the estate rifles were Winchester featherweights chambered in 270. Put me off the caliber for a long time. A memory is a hard thing to overcome .
