Keeping a carcass cool in a car

So, what's the best way to keep a couple of deer, roe mainly, cool while driving back from Scotland? Will 3-4 hours in a box in the car boot be fine in the middle of summer? I was thinking of installing a mini USB powered fan in the lid of the box I put them in, gas anyone else tried this?

You should be fine if it's only a short time at ambient. Get them home, and then chill them. If you can get a few bottles of cold water in the cavity it'll help

You'll get 3 roe in those cool boxes they're ideal.Stop on the way home for some ice and take plenty of frozen milk bottles.

been there, done that, got the keds and ticks all over the car. Dont even bother. I gave up shooting deer in the warmer months years ago
when the foliage has died back and the temperature has dropped is when the hunter has the advantage

I use two methods and sometimes together - the first thing I did was get hold of some 2lt lemonade / coke bottles. Then fill 3/4 full of a salt water solution and then stick in the freezer. When frozen they take an age to thaw and so a couple of these in the chest cavity of of a red or large deer and a single bottle in a roe or muntjac works a treat. I ended up with half a dozen bottles so that I could keep a couple frozen in a cool box and then swap over half way home. The second thing I eventually did was buy a bloody great igloo thing. I can get a whole roe buck in that with a frozen bottle inside it. The cool box will take a red provided you cut the animal into parts. You can still put the frozen bottles around the animals too. The first method is super cheap and easy… :)

Ps the cool box keeps the critters away too…

Plasterer's bath, bags of ice from the local garage mini mart, I also have a good-sized 12v cooler box if I won't be close to any ice supplies, & take freezer blocks, If it's a BIG UN', I take the route of our cousins & break it down into a more handleable size.

You can get 3 good sized roe,or 2 sika hinds,or 8 mounties into the igloo box
A frozen bottle in each cavity like below helps, but these luckily were in a chiller over night.I have shot a young sika in the Highlands and its kept perfectly fine over a weekend then endured the 8 hour drive home.

Alternatively,if you have space, you can build a ply box and line it with insulation for the plasterers bath. That also worked a treat but it was far too big to move on my own.

I was always worried that stuffing that amount of animal into the coolbox would mean that the deer on the bottom didn't cool enough: that's from when they are shot. I guess if they are already chilled then it's a different story. I've not had that many in mine (said the actress to the bishop) but good to know it can handle them (said.....)

I have 1 of these very useful as already said with 2ltr pop bottle ice packs .
Use large " plate " cool blocks outside a pop bottle in the cavity and a sleeping bag on top to insulate .
The decathlon bag folds up to a 14" square, sleeping bag to not a lot and an electric cool box works on the cool bottles and ice packs are.

Would it fit a fallow doe/pricket?

I've just looked at the size on that one its the 120qrt or 113ltrs 44.1D x 97.3 x 45. Mine is the 165qrt or 156 ltrs, measures 45x103x54.There's not much in it but I see no reason you can't get two in the smaller one.
Thought it looked a bit small, as I use the Homebase black tubs that are 145 litres and they just about do 3 roe or one small fallow Without lid.

Plasterers bath with insect mesh over the top secured with a bungee, a couple of ice packs/frozen water bottles in the cavity & a few more around the carcass .Maybe cut/drill a few holes in the bath sides & cover with mesh to improve the air flow, tape up when they're not needed.
