Trophy import ban - current status

Well folks, not that it’ll make much difference but I figured I should be at least 5% proactive around this.

Is it my understanding that the ‘newest’ bill was voted through parliament pretty much unanimously? And if so, is it then due to go through lords,(again?) at some point?

I was basically trying to weigh up if you can even write to House of Lords or whether you still have to go through your local MP? In which case, that ship seems to have sailed.

Seems an easy vote swinger for MPs despite there likely being more important things to sort closer to home.

Cheers!

I keep writing to my MP

Are you getting much back from that or standard template reply?

Getting a fair bit back
He says he does not like it agree etc etc - So i have sent him various articles as and when they arise on the benefits to conservation and the communities
I am no Big game / trophy hunter - but i do understand the value of the resource and the need to conserve it and how we can do that

It was a “low hanging fruit” thing - unfortunately the majority of the public don’t understand and just think of a dead elephant/leopard etc and so it’s never coming back…I hate to be pessimistic but I think that’s just the way it is I’m afraid.

Have you got any dates that it was last discussed in the House of Commons? I have been looking since Labour came to power but have been unable to find any.

I have written to my local MP a few days after the election, but have had no response so far.

When the officials from the countries offering international hunting aren’t listened too and the “we know best” approach is being taken by the over arching public it would appear to be futile to even consider changing any of the U.K. officials stance on this subject.

Given the expense of bringing any memorabilia back from any international hunting l, it might not actually be that impactive. It shouldn’t stop anyone travelling to hunt and enjoy participating in wildlife management. We just need to adjust to accept photographs are the new norm. Rather than wall hangers, although I was just thinking about what it would be like to have the boss of a big Dagga Bull on my living room wall. I then realised the rest of the family would t actually fit in the room at the same time 🤣

I’m sure there are a few it would affect more than me.

Maybe the Government doesn't like being told that they are behaving like Colonial Governors by the President of Botswana....
The President did (jokingly) suggest sending 20,000 Elephants to Germany when they were discussing a ban on Trophy Hunting/Imports, he felt that if the Germans were so good at telling everyone else what to do, they could have Botswana's problem!
Just another example of the good ole Westerners telling the simple peoples of the world how to carry on their lives!

Added to that, maybe there are more important things to look at rather than a tiny number of Trophy imports.......

No change to anything AFAIK. I'm unsure how these impressions came about, but think this was the last mention on SD.

Nothing so far in the new parliamentary session.

There have only been a few working days in the HOC so far before Parliament recessed on July 30th. There are key pieces of legislation to enact which were specific commitments promised in the first 100 days of the Labour goverment. This isn't one of the Big 5, so plans for the minor stuff are a bit vague at this stage.

Although the last Bill was talked out in the Lords last September, reforming this House may change the arithmetic once the 'House of Lords (Hereditary Peers) Bill' is passed which will come first. 13 of the 17 who spoke in the COWH then were Conservative peers.

However, page 59 of the Manifesto 2024 does say:-
Stronger animal welfare
Labour will improve animal welfare.
We will ban trail hunting and the import of hunting trophies.
We will end puppy smuggling and farming, along with the use of snare traps.
We will partner with scientists, industry, and civil society as we work towards the phasing out of animal testing.

BASC is paid to keep a lookout for developments so you can relax, the Voice of Shooting will keep everyone informed. :)

I’ve not been keeping great tabs on this but doesn’t it only cover some species not all?
There was amendments to the bill, at one point, that only meant it only applies to cites species annex i & ii from memory, or those on the endangered / vulnerable / IUCN red list. I think. But not sure where the latest draft got to as the original was going to band all imports (and thus exports??) of trophies which is much more wide scope and would have direct domestic impact to stalking in the uk I would imagine.

You want to tell him he’s not in parliament to voice what he does or doesn’t like he’s there to voice what his constituents like,As all the other members of parliament should realise.

In fairness to BASC, they did ask their members to respond to the public consultation, and I believe proved guidance on answers. As far as I know, a response from a shooting organisation counts as one response only, and no weight is attached to its membership numbers. That's why it's important for individuals to have input.

Also asked the question as to how mnay responses they had regarding Trophy hunting

This is the problem - so few in our community want to engage

I agree, I wrote to my local MP. Have yet to receive a reply yet, but I doubt anyone one else has written to them about the pro “ Trophy Hunting”. Benefits.

Thanks folks. Sounds like a letter to local MP is the way to go - sounds like a waste of time but must try.

I wasn’t sure whether the original bill was scrapped? I think it failed, went back to square one and a new bill got passed through again. So any amendments went out the window?

I’ll be honest, the non-cites exemptions were a reasonable compromise. Another big nail in the coffin sure, but almost something you could ‘deal’ on.

From what I’ve seen regarding the colonial argument, folk have been saying that we’re not stopping what’s happening in the African countries, just stopping what’s imported into ours. Will be interesting to see if we’re still exporting red stags the other way.,
