Trophy import ban - current status

As usual you are either misunderstanding or misreading

"We" as a community - in my opinion - need to stand closer together and all be counted - whether that is a an active shot - beater - picker up - or consumer
I think you are spot on, don't let them divide and conquer. I have no interest in big game shooting, I've been on photographic safaris a few times so I've seen a fair amount of the game species. I don't see the difference between shooting a deer, a fox, a rabbit or any of the species in other countries. The difference is the public see those on the TV; they must be rare and experts like Chris Packham or Ricky Gervais tell us that we shouldn't shoot them. So provided the shooting of an animal is fair and respectful I'll fight your corner as my sport will be next if I don't.

it is possible to get your message across to the general public on other social media outlets with well worded responses too there posts, without being to aggressive and some will take it in.

Very solid paper on trophy hunting and the (bad) consequences of poor legislation in Biological Conservation. I am having trouble posting the link accurately but go to adam hart twitter and click on his most recent tweet which will take you there.

Where are we on all the bollchocks with phytosanitary and veterinary certification etc on bringing back a trophy.

As far as trophies themselves, they are the inedible parts of an old animal that has been culled rather than dying from starvation and old age.

You only get old trophy quality animals when you have a healthy population of animals with good habitat. And trophy hunters donate huge sums of money to ensure such ecosystems are maintained.

I have no issue at all with someone prepared to pay huge sums for the privalege of shooting an old animal, provided most of the moneys go back into the management and protection of such wildlife.

Folks, was it reintroduced? I can’t see evidence of it as yet

Field Sports Britain are reporting the trophy ban has not been selected. Neither has the ban on drag hunting- the importation of fur bill has been chosen being as UK banned fur farming a while ago . But still imports lots of it-

Will try and find the episode, thanks!

23 October 24 - start off with hound hunting in Ireland

It looks like the bill is still there but unlikely to be debated in Jan?

I’m not quite sure how long this is going to go on for. Seems every 5-6 months they bring up a new bill and repeat until they get what they want

It will rumble on & on I suspect until it is finally banned unfortunately.

The report from Fieldsports News is wrong.
That's no surprise as it quotes Farage who knows nothing about the inner workings of Parliament, but likes to start a rumour if it benefits him . . .;)
"Labour lord plans new trophy imports bill"
"The trophy imports bill may be back. In an interview with former MP Henry Smith on GBNews, Nigel Farage revealed that the UK Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill will appear in front of the House of Lords during the week of 7 October 2024.
Former MP John Spellar, now Lord Spellar, plans to use his new title to relaunch the bill. He is one of many sponsors of this ‘cockroach’ bill, including Smith, who have suffered a defeat after defeat in Parliament."

Last updated: 22 October 2024 at 14:55

The sponsor is a Tory MP David Reed (Cons. - Exmouth & Exeter East).
It has to be said that his PM Bill is one of 128 already in the queue so its chances are poor.

It’s a shame. Should be done in a basis like in the states. Regulated through biologists. Blood origins and the likes of Amy Dickman have the correct approach.

Thanks! Didn’t realize it was on a queue basis. Hopefully goes nowhere..

Unfortunately with both sides of the house putting in private members bills it is a very slippery slope- I consider myself lucky as I have managed three trips to South Africa and brought taxidermy home. Others may not be so fortunate in the future.

I’m supposed to be away first time in May coming. To be honest, I will just have to drop the deposit if it got banned in between. Shame really as I think folk see the standard photos of people lying down next to a giraffe. When if you look past any particular motives, there’s so many benefits as a consequence.

One of my trips will eventually never happen. Be it capercaillie in Europe or a Spanish ibex. Think putting it off until a 40th of 50th birthday is risky with the way it’s going.

On a related note, does anyone know of a good UK broker to sort the import fees, taxes, licenses...etc.?

Cheers
