Dimensions of Peli 1750 foam question ?

Hi, I'm needing to purchase replacement foam for a Peli 1750 case. I have found several online suppliers, but need to put in dimensions and sizes. I was hoping to exactly replace the original factory specification foam. Was wondering some one might know the exact sizes and number of pieces used. Length, width and height. I think there was two thick sections and two thinner eggshell pattern sections.

The easiest way is to measure the original, but as you don't have it, start off by looking up the internal dimensions listed for your case.

Peli 1750 Dimensions

I use Foam Supplier and found them to be one of the cheapest, with the best choice of foams. My preference is the "packing foam".

The "egg box" foam isn't very deep, 30mm, so I use a plain sheet, I'd suggest 20mm, and the egg box foam in the lid, with double sided tape to hold it all in place.

Looking at the depth of your case, 89mm, 40mm + 50mm sheets will do the base, and either will be thick enough to clear the internal wheel covers, once the foam is notched out.

Thank you for the reply. So it is 3 sections not 4 then. Case will be used with different rifles, so they need to be firmly gripped by foam on the surface, rather than recessed in a cutaway in the foam. Is yours set up like that, as there will be some compression needed, with the thicknesses you kindly recommended.

Relying on compression to grip the rifle, rather than recessing the foam, is a horrible way to do it.

The foam is cheap enough, than you can have multiple centre sections you swap as required. Personally, I made up different centres, glued to the base foam, which makes them far stronger, then just fitted the block to suit.

Or, you could use Ethafoam for the centre block, which is much firmer than the "packing" foam, and you'd get away without sticking them together, but I wouldn't use it for the top, & bottom, because it's less forgiving.

I bought the original foam for my SKB case and recessed it. It survived one trip and the soft foam started to rip so that there was a real risk of packed items clashing together. I ended up throwing it out and buying Shadowfoam which ended up cheaper and much more resilient.

I have done this many times with my own 1750 & for others.

You need 3 pieces of foam - one for the top, another piece the same thickness to go in the bottom & a 3rd piece to make the filling in the sandwich. The middle piece is slightly thinner than the other two & is the piece that you cut a silhouette out in for the rifle & any other kit.

I can’t recall dimensions but the length & width are easily measured. For the lid measure the depth so the foam is below the rim by 3-5mm. Use the same thickness for the bottom piece & subtract that from the depth of the bottom (less 3-5mm for below the rim) to give you the thickness of the middle piece.

If you do this you will normally find there is just a bit of compression when you close the lid on rifles so the combination of that & the cut out will keep everything nice & safe. I’ve seen 1750s fall off baggage dollies travelling at speed on the apron & also thrown out of holds onto trucks & never had any issues with what was inside!

Filling top & bottom with 2 pieces only you’ll find that you won’t be able to close the case with a rifle in it.

I always used to buy standard black packing foam from efoam as they were cheapest for the quantities I was buying - enough for 8-10 cases plus some spares. But postage was the killer as far as costs went.

One last tip - if you’re flying with rifles in cases make sure that you do the cut outs so that the serial number is visible without taking the rifle out - it stops the various punters & staff at customs getting over excited when you start waving a rifle around!

If you're carrying it in your car and the case is to stop crushing, then you may get away with no silhouette, but if flying or trusting others, then get cutting.

The company I used to get my foam is eFoam, based in Bilston, on 01902 405 100
It was the packing foam the sizes I got were 93x35x5cm and I got three sheets.
One glued to the top and one glued to the bottom, the middle sheet I cut out with a very sharp knife, the barrel slot I cut slightly V shaped so it did sit a bit proud and therefore was held in place by slight compression.
OOPs the dimensions I have quoted are for the short case used for my modular Blaser, not sure of the number.
