Isuzu D-Max 1.9 compared to Hilux

Looking at getting back into a pickup again.

Been to look at a few Hilux's today, but they were rust buckets.

Seen a nice D-Max though but was unsure on the 1.9 engine or the reliability of them.
The D-Max was a 18 plate for reference. it was £13k

My budget was going to be £10k, but it seems like I will have to sift through the tripe to get a decent pickup (regret getting rid of my last Hilux now). So may need to up my budget.

So question is, is the 1.9 D-Max a good choice, or am I better sticking to the Hilux and upping the budget to say £13k

Personally, I'd try and find a better Hilux. The 1.9 suffers a lot of acceleration lag and is a pretty noisy engine.
It was something I was wondering about with it only being a 1.9. Though I'd guess a remap would sort that issue out.

Trying to find a decent Hilux in budget is proving to be a pain.

I'm not so keen on the newer 2.4L Hilux, due to all the emissions gubbins choking the engine.

I have towed nearly 3 ton with the 1.9, I thought before I got it what good is a 1.9 but in all honesty it pulled no bother at all, they have changed the gear ratios a bit I believe to get the torque but I would have no problem buying one myself. This was a work vehicle btw not my own personal one but I was driving and towing with it all day every day it never missed a beat.

There's 1 local to me on a 19 plate that I've enquired about, and also a 2.4 Hilux.

I can see what of the 2 is the better engine. Both around the same price bracket.

I'd prefer the pre 2016, 2.5 or 3L model, it finding a tidy 1 is hard going

You can drive mine the week after....might have to extend the pedals so you can reach them. :coat: :old:

I had one as a work vehicle, the model I had was pretty basic, didn't like the gear box at all, the mechanism for lowering the spare was horrible and the rear tub filled with water when it rained

Just got a Dmax on a 20 plate, I was pleasantly surprised about 1.9 engine, tows absolutely fine it also doesn't have add blue which is a major + for me.
I have owned the a 64 plate with 2.5 Engine and from memory the 1.9 is every bit as good.
It also has reasonable mpg, yes the Dmax is more tractory than Hilux with a few less frills but that's what I like and gets job done.

A large estate near me runs a dozen of them and they are full of praise for the reliability. They are several grand less than a toyota as well. Probably my next truck.

I’ve ran a 2.4 mk8 auto Hilux for the last 8 years, regularly serviced and have had absolutely no issues, like most of the Toyota engines it’s a decent unit and just needs annual servicing to keep it running properly.

Hilux will rust quicker than the equivalent L200

If your options are open you will find a 178 BHP manual L200 for that money and probably be happy with it

Yes they can go wrong - but so can all the other brands

The Izuzu are agricultural to drive
