Sorry if this is a silly Question or been asked before,
I’m just new to all this and received my shotgun certificate couple weeks ago.
I have seen a Shotgun I like and it’s from a private seller,
My question, he said to pay him for the gun and postage RFD his end, but do I make sure I’m covered ( for any scams ) sorry to be blunt,
Does it get take. To sellers RFD, I can call the sellers RFD shop confirm the gun is there and as described, I then pays the related fees?
Then he mentioned he needs to see me Certificate why is this? Should it not be my RFD who checks that before releasing said gun to me?
Sorry for the long winded question
Cheers

Distance selling laws are missunderstood/policed.
My understanding you post him your ticket he fills it in and sends it back, then his rfd posts the gun to your rfd. Not sure how you ensure the guns is as described or he doesnt just run off with the money. You could pay the rfd to be an agent

You can go to the trouble of buying that gun, take the risk that it is as described or travel and collect in person, or look for a similar shotgun local.

If you decide to buy this one. ask for the seller to send you photos of his certificate confirming his identity and that of the gun. You then have to send him your certificate so he as the seller fills in your certificate and pay him for the gun and possibly his RFD fees to send it to a local to you RFD who will also charge you a fee. Your certificate is posted back to you or travels with the shotgun.

Only you can decide if the trouble is worth it.

Having been in the selling position before, I had a chat to my local (dauntsey guns) first, and they said they would take care of the shipping, it would just cost me £25 for them to send it to the recipients desired RFD then they would check and fill out the licence. for my part I just sent any and all the photos of the gun to the chap that was buying it and when he was happy we agreed a price, I dropped if off with my local and didn't hear any more until the chap collected it and sent me a 'thanks' message.

Firstly as a new shotgun owner, I would strongly advise that you do not buy a shotgun that you haven’t seen or handled directly. Shotgun shooting is all about fit, and if a gun doesn’t fit you are waisting a lot of time and money.

Fortunately there are plenty of shotguns available in the market. Go to a good clay ground or gunshop and they will have many shotguns all looking for new homes. Take your time and get good advice on what sort of gun fits you well and that you can shoot well.

It very much is a buyers market but you really won’t save any money by buying a gun from the other end of the country.

What should you look for in a gun - Johnny at The Gun Shop or TGS on YouTube has some pretty good videos on the subject.

It will also very depend on what sort of gun you are looking for. There are some places that really know and understand over and unders and clay pigeon shooting, others that really understand side by sides and game shooting and others that really know about rifles. There are a few that really understand all three.

Finally if you looking to buy from some distance away go and see it in the flesh and look at it in detail.

Private sellers are private sellers and you have little in the way of comeback. Most decent gunshops will offer some sort of aftersales service, warranty etc., but these days will be on the more expensive guns where they have done a full service.

The pages of SD are full of questions as to why my gun doesn’t work, doesn’t shoot, can’t hit a thing. Mostly these will be from a new by who has bought something totally unsuitable or was trying to save a few quid.

Support your local gunshops and they will look after you.

Well that’s not what the law states, unclear from what you have said who was the actual seller, how the money changed hands , if the RFD then they become legally responsible in so many ways.

I was the seller, I'm am not saying what the law states, just what I did, this was a year or two ago so maybe it has changed, the money changed hands before I sent the gun,

No hassle with the certificate that’s easy enough mate was paying up front before they would take it to the shop etc,
Just worried about being scammed

I have done quite a few and normally do a WhatsApp call see each others certificates and then once with rfd and they confirm they have it transfer money
Tbh trying to scam someone if you have a sgc/fac would not be the smartest of moves imho

I posted a shotgun on here, only a cheapie, but £50 my end to RFD same at the buyers end so ended up being pointless, if you're ticket gets misplaced in the post I should imagine it's a quite unpleasant blame game?

Send it recorded delivery and get the seller to do the same.I personally wouldn't buy anything sight unseen as condition can be a bit subjective.

Having purchased quite a few shotguns from elsewhere in the country and used RFD to RFD with no no other option, I would nonetheless agree 100% with Heym SR20. Over enthusiasm (as in someone with a new SGC) often brings about impulse buying and given that at present, more so than ever it can be really hard trying to resell something that you've decided doesn't fit the bill when the market is flooded with cheap second hand guns. Get a gunsmith or clay ground to find something that fits and feels right, at least to start off. Having said all that, I haven't had a bad experience yet buying from a distance, always use Special Delivery only when sending a cert- Recorded's can get lost or heavily delayed
