PRIMERS SHORTAGE

Viht were advertising for 2x supervisors for their new primer plant via LinkedIn yesterday. I heard initially their plant was due to open toward the end of this year or early in 2025 so this will no doubt be good news for the European primer market and its shortages

During the Covid period when I got really low on primers I started using small pistol primers in place of rifle ones.
Only used them in carts up to and including .223 but never had any ftf; hang fire etc.
Ken.

One of my rifle club chums attempted to by sp primers instead of sr, the RFD declined the sale because it didn't match the firearms on his certificate,- aren't our firearms laws absolutely ridiculous?

Just going to leave this here. CCI BR4, I’ve just lost 2 muntjac… 🤬🤬🤬

Edit - just added the photo showing the bullets still in the case, I didn’t just miss 2 muntjac with 3 shots 😂.

Did you add any powder to the cases before seating the bullets 😉
PS how the M695

Relax Sir,
As I said, I’ve fired 600 in last few months without a single primer losing interest in doing its job.
Ken.
Agree, I’ve been running MagTech 9 1/2 LRP with no issues yet. Sounds batch or process/ rifle dependant though

Yes, it fires everything else perfectly. I now use Federal LRP and haven't had a single hang fire or no fire. Murom LRP were my first choice, but they are impossible to get these days.
I still have 19974 Murom LRs left that I bought just after the invasion but before the gougers clicked onto them.

I’ve had problems with magtec. Probably 10 misfires from 100. 2 primers that misfired were removed and hit with a hammer and nail (wearing suitable protection!) and still wouldn’t go off.
I’ve bought another batch of magtec and am giving them another go - 50 in snd no problems yet.
Interesting Remington primers give me about 70fps less velocity than magtec. Cci somewhere between the 2.

I assume that there is still a shortage of primers, ive had a bit of good fortune the last day or two, I managed to get 1000 Fed GMM LRP's yesterday which I shall be keeping but today I was offered 1000 CCI Large primers which if the offer is for real will share out amongst SD members who are struggling to find any for themselves, I dont know what I will have to pay but I wont add much as I have my own supply and can Imagine what it would be like if I didnt have any

Mike
S & B Are readily available and good and more to the point only about 60£ thousand

The RFD may have saved you chum a lot of trouble, small pistol primers are shorter than Small rifle and have much thinner cups so you run the risk of misfires and / or pierced primers and gas escape. Pistol / revolvers don't have the same strike energy delivered to the firing pin compared to rifles and cartridges tend to be of much lower pressure.

When you seat a primer you are actually seating the anvil up against the primer compound as it bottoms out in the primer pocket, this ensures the firing pin has something to strike against, the shorter small pistol primer may either seat too deeply thus reducing the impact of the firing pin or if it's not seated snuggly, some of the firing pin strike will be used up pushing the primer forward in the pocket.

Many doubtless will say "it's been fine for me no problems" but they are different products and not designed to be interchangeable.

which I'm not keen on as tend to get more misfires
Can you expand on that please I have been using Magtech LRP with no issues whatsoever for some time and interested to know what happens when you have a "misfiire" as I bought 1K magtech a little while ago

It just fails to fire. 3x attempts on the same primer and nothing. Deprimed once I got home (after using a kinetic hammer to pull the bullet and dump the powder) and they were just dead.

3x failures from 60 rounds. Thankfully I only bought 300 of them and using them for target loads where its not the end of the world if it fails to ignite.

A lot of us have had this issue - see my post above. And yet others have had perfect results. I’ve tried a second batch and thus far perfect - I’ve not changed anything.
So - I’ve run the stats on the 2 batches and significant difference.
I suspect there are some bad batches in circulation

They do have thinner cups, but dimension wise small rifle and small pistol are interchangable.

Large pistol is shorter than large rifle, generally speaking. There is some variance between manufacturers.
