Raccoons escape from an Isle of Wight zoo

I think it would depend upon them being clearly identifiable as "owned" animals, and the owner not having given up all attempts to recover them.
If the owner still has traps out, i think shooting it would be a silly idea to shoot it.

But there's a big difference between an escaped animal that is clearly identified as such (eg, tag, microchip, etc) and which the owner is actively trying to recapture, and an escaped animal that has gone "feral" and which attempts to recapture have been abandoned.

The raccoon hasn't been abandoned
