An alternative to Araldite?

Evening all,

In preparation for an impending bedding job I went out to buy some Araldite to glue the pillars in but rather than the twin syringes that squeezed out two lines of epoxy that you then mixed together, they have switched over to a nifty new mixer nozzle. OK, sounds like a cracking idea but you only get 2 nozzles per pack & they appear to be single use so once both used the rest of the contents of the syringes is useless.

Now before anyone says, yes, I know you can still buy the stuff in the metal tubes with screw top lids but I don’t want to go down that route.

So, the question, in the absence of the old style syringes, what is anyone using/recommending instead of good old fashioned Araldite? - I’ve tried gorilla glue but it doesn’t go properly hard so I am loath to use it to glue bedding pillars in.

Any advice most welcome.

Thanks.

The mixer tube still works after the two tips are used, there’s a stopper which is divided into two halves and you can still use the glue just without the tips, you just then mix manually.

Alternative readily available in the U.K. of decent quality and strength would be JB weld, which you can also use for the bedding, so you can actually do it all in one go

JB weld or hunt out araldite on the net in the old style 2 tubes with a lot on ebay in single tube packs.

Every online seller I’ve contacted who is advertising the old style packs has come back & said they only have the new mixer type in stock now. Even Wickes advertise the old style but stock is the new style.

I used to use araldite but I mixed in aluminium filings into it which gave a better strength ratio without any longterm rusting issues, shredded glassfibres could be done too.

Good call, not that I do any pillar bedding but get the idea behind that as concreate over the years has been using GF in the mix

Have given up on trying to find the old type Araldite syringes & have ordered some JB Weld so that’s next weekend’s ‘project’ sorted - if I get the pillars in on Friday I may even be able to get the full bedding done before going back to work on Monday 👍 Good job too as I now only have 1 round of ammo left for the 6.5 so perfect time to be sorting out the GRS stock & then aligning the lrf on the Alpex using a set of Burris rings with eccentric inserts. Will be setting it all up with a picatinny rail so I can swap between the Alpex & one of my Diavari 6-24x56 scopes.

Well, for those who’ve not used it before, JB Weld was a bit runny for my liking but has done the job. Bedding next but not before next weekend.
Put the tubes in the fridge next time, as if you were in a warm room as the temp will have made it runnier.

Back in the 80's with 2k paint they had winter/summer hardener and the same in thinners. Still got the odd run mind you

Gorge who taught me to paint used to mix the 2k paint up and leave it 20 mins that way the curing was taking place in a small way so his first coat was tacky quite soon for the second.

JB Weld is superb for making things stay in place - like sling studs etc. Not sure I’d use it for a bedding job however. As stated there is better stuff - DevCon for example available.
