Nope. If people think they know it all they can become complacent….nothing illogical about that.

When people approach guns with a cautious attitude they will tend to be more careful - that’s likely the reason there are so few accidents with them in the U.K. comparatively.

But anyone on here with training can become complacent?

And a person with a small amount of training like the shotgun course mentioned might never be complacent?

I’m not going anywhere - what I’m saying is there’s no requirement for compulsory training based on the statistics and data on incidents relating to firearms.

The FeO can suggest these and it’s up to people if they want to attend but there is nothing to suggest it’s a requirement.

There are a lot of extremely experienced and knowledgeable guys on here, a great many of whom have been through both the application and renewals process with various forces over the entire country. Very few of them (myself included) welcome the ever-increasing trends for FEOs to start implementing requests off their own back. A shotgun safety course is NOT a requirement for the grant of a license and should be challenged.

Of course, once granted a license people can feel free to take as many courses as they like, but once applicants start jumping through hoops for their own subjective reasons it opens the door for more and more unreasonable demands. A line needs to be drawn.

You haven’t answered the question of how an FEO is supposed to assess the fitness of an applicant who hasn’t grown up in a rural environment with a shooting background and can demonstrate suitable experience? (I am NOT talking about the OP.)

Certainly a basic safety course can do that, but it’s what 25 or 50 shots and instruction on what is the dangerous end of the shotgun. All that and far more can be achieved at any Clay Club. If for rifles then the probationary period at a Club again delivers that. At least by joining a Club you show commitment to use the gun going forward and learn how to shoot with likeminded experienced people. Otherwise what do a basic safety course and go get a gun.

Yes I have. That's exactly what the existing application process is intended to do. The FEOs job is to follow it, not implement whatever additional conditions he decides may be useful.

He could do his job and talk to the applicant and establish what his level of competence is and direct him on OPTIONAL courses and training.

We still didn’t establish if the FEO was saying this was compulsory or just a suggestion, I guess that’s the kicker.

He asked me about my experience with shotguns I told him he did want the course said MET requires it unless I get one of the clay shooting places I go to write a letter saying I’m competent, problem is I shoot over few places and been to each place like 3 times (let’s say 5 different places) I should be more consistent with one place. Anyways never mind I’ll do the course and be on my way
