.308 barrel length

I might explore the Viht double base powders for a little more energy

This is a rather interesting thread discussing the .308 and double based powders. You probably won’t see an advantage.

I have always been an advocate of the 155gr bullet for the .308 I used the 2155 matchking in my old TRG. I recon it would be a good performer in a shorter barreled .308

Will give it a read. Usually go to either 140 or 150 for the 160 / 170 weight range. Definitely be using 150’s in the Surgeon though.

I have two .308's with 20" fluted barrels (one Sako, one Tikka, both D18) and I find them practically perfect. I use 130gr Barnes TTSX as a bullet of choice over IMR4895 (still going strong courtesy of 10 pots off a shooter on here) achieving 2945 (factory VOR-TX does 2965 out of the same barrels).

This is my SRS covert, its a 16" 308. This thing has been incredibly reliable out to 1000 yards and more. It loves 175 match kings.

Got to love a Desert Tech, fantastic bull pup design. Not owned one myself by a couple of friends have which I’ve shot, really nice. Love the colour scheme and interesting you’re getting good accuracy out of the 175’s at 1k, they must stabilise well going transonic.

It is a case of what are you going to use the rifle for? do you want to lighten the rifle ? you could always do it in stages, flute the barrel, then shorten it, to 22 ins and see if it comfortably fits your needs.

at the other extreme a 16ins barrel is good for 600 yards shooting, what do you wish to achieve?

I suppose what i wish to achieve is something I’m happy to lug around my ground for 3 or 4 hours but retain enough barrel length for reasonable speed with 150’s, possibly lighter with copper. Obviously I wouldn’t have chosen this barrel myself and don’t really want another target rifle so trying to make it into something usable for stalking.

308 is a great round in short barrels , i used a 308 with a 20'' barrel for years all over the highlands on hinds predominantly

i now use a 20'' 6.5 creedmoor

I know it’s a subject that’s been discussed at length, however I have a choice to make and interested in other’s experiences.

I recently picked up a custom action in .308 barrelled with a 30” straight taper barrel. Needless to say I’m not in any hurry to take it around the woods even with a biathlon sling. Happy to leave the profile as is but will add some flutes and shorten. Question is should I go ultra short 16” / 18.5” or leave a little longer. Anyone else running a shorty?
Would you shorten it from just the muzzle end, or both ends with a re-chamber?

^This is the best reason for a short barreled rifle. I out one together for my son when he was 12, a little Remington 700 with a 16" .260 Rem barrel I cut off. I'd do it again in a heartbeat but I'd probably use a CF barrel now.

Just chop and thread the muzzle. The original barrelling was done by a very well known smith so have no doubt it’s spot on.
No wear in the chamber area then?
My thinking was once you have drastically shortened it from the muzzle end, it would be too late.

here's some real world data on a 20" Pacnor that i built on a tikka 595. pretty healthy velocity and not a bad 20 round group either, apart from the one he pulled. I think a velocity of around 3150 fps will be where we settle at on this one.

I’ve got a couple of 20” .308’s which both like 168 gr and up at relatively sedate speeds. I’ve only used them for target shooting. I think part of my nervousness about chopping this new one very short is I’ve not been able to get decent speeds out of these. However I’m sure I can find a load with 150’s or lighter.

Awesome pics!

It’s brand new apart from proof loads and a test group. I think I’d only re cut a chamber on a used barrel if I knew it was a shooter.
