The end of JLR

Spent 28 years making interiors for them ,lovely to drive when borrowed But.
Carp engines,horror stories of engine faults and rubbish dealers .
Never buy 1 ever ,and the new all Electric plans no thank you.
 
The whole Jaguar rebrand smacks of desperation, in simple terms it would appear to be aimed directly at the “ Yoof” market while completely alienating all of their current customer base. In the event it works it will be a case study for years to come on every Brand/Marketing course, my prediction is it will feature on those courses but not as the authors planned

Which, let’s be honest, will likely lead to the terminal end of JLR as they will never compete with companies that can actually make cars that work and don’t break down.
I read the article before coming here and, yes, like Rover, Riley and Triumph the question is sadly on point. Do we really now need them? And we have lost also Humber of the defunct Rootes Group and Daimler (this last part of JLR).

The article makes the point that that customer demographic is shrinking. So above with cars the same below with shotguns.

Like the "name" gunmakers of old some endure, some struggle on the name having been purchased but any true connection to the roots of that name gone, and some disappear while others emerge. Who would have thought of the arrival of Hatsan twenty years ago? Or that Parker Hale would effectively disappear?

Adapt and fit the current climate at that time..
Hatsan brought In cnc quality with bargain basement prices that allowed many on foreshore or clay ground or entry into pcp airguns etc
Relying on name alone these days doesn't cut it ...
Christ that JLR advert was beyond woke !
All it did was pander to the unicorn and rainbow brigade

Lost its way when BMW and Tatta (TAT) It's never been any good since then pumping over price crap ! It lost its way and only wished to pump out Chelsea tractors they became the most expensive first choice for footballers wives, pimps and unit's oh lest not forget the most stolen TAT out there.
Mk 2 Freelander HSE really enjoyed that until the 7k bills for gearbox and turbo units started to roll in .
 
Jaguar once made wonderful sports cars and saloon cars with sporty performance -Ferrari, Aston, Bently type performance but at a much more blue collar price point. Think E Type vs Ferrari 275 GTB 4.

Landrover once made very robust a capable cars that got to all corners of the earth. The early Range rover did that in a high degree of comfort.

Once they were combined under Tata control into JLR,

Jaguar made sports cars and sports saloons that were quirky. F Type vs Porche Cayman or Saloon vs Audi, Mercedes or BMW - really no competition.

Land Rover. The later Defenders were really early 1980’s technology at best, with a Ford Transit engine and poor build quality. Range Rover, RR Sport, Discovery all very capable designs, comfortable long distance transport - across any terrain but over engineered, poor engine design and poor reliability. New Defender - no different.

Not sure where their position in the current market is. The Landrover products are really only affordable to the ultra wealthy or those who are using lease hire schemes through a business and kidding themselves that they are saving tax.

JLR are positioning themselves to the hip young ultra wealthy next generation in Asia, China etc etc. not the UK.
 
I might agree with some if the above but as number 1 son works there and is supporting his wife and my granddaughter I personally wish them well for the future and I hope the company goes from strength to strength.
The thought of him losing his job in his mid 30’s is something I don’t want to even contemplate.
It's not the cars, it's the dealers that are the issue and why I stopped buying LRs. I went to Heathrow on Friday, in the short term car park I would say the most numerous car was the new Defender.
 
I'm not giving £50 grand of my money to a company who's got a worse reliability record than lada
£50 grand… they’d probably accept that as a deposit for the balance on finance 😂 - am sure I read that they’re looking to sell £100 grand plus models 😳 can’t see where their market is tbh 🤷🏻‍♂️

I never had a Jag, I had a few Land Rovers and for my money the current crop of Range Rovers are too, big too complex and too expensive. DIY maintenance is virtually impossible so they have a very short lifespan.
The original Rangie could be bought by someone like me as an 8 - 10 year old motor and easily kept for another 10 with a bit of enthusiastic DIYing.
Same thing with the P38, a bit more complex but doable and the 2.5 diesel engines made them affordable to tax and drive.
You wont do that with the current model, which means it has a lifespan of 8 - 10 years. Once the main dealers wont work on it anymore its finished. Then theres the big engines that put the road tax over £1,500 a year here and low profile tyres at £ 200+ a corner.
Lovely vehicles, but like I said, too big, too complex and short lived because they’re just too damned expensive for the average ordinary working Joe to even consider taking on as a runabout once they age a bit.
 
It does appear that Jaguar and Land Rover are aiming themselves at changed markets these days. Land Rover is still the much more successful of the two and you've got to wonder how successful they could have been if only they were more reliable. However most of their clientele these days will be in the top 10% of rich people and obviously they will have at least one other car to use whilst the Rangie is away on it's hols in the dealership waiting for parts. As for Jaguar, it's really hard to know what to think. They were at one time seen as old men's' cars, but they overcame that. But using pretty much the same engines as Land Rovers, reliability wasn't much better. Plus, many of the Jaguar line up had competitors in the Land Rover line up. Madness! So I can see Jaguar's reasons for change. But the way that's gone? I dunno. Maybe all the negative hype is wrong and they will sell by the boat load. And maybe Rachel Riley will come a-knocking on my door. Time will tell, but I'm not betting my pension on either of those possibilities.
