which pick up?

I think a lot of the issues with modern vehicles is that traction control kicks in instantly - with both auto and manual boxes.
I find it a right pain as sometimes you want 2nd gear and a bit of power, the "computer says no", which means you then gut stuck and have to engage 4wd and traction off to get out of the situation it out you in the first place!
Some of our estate is fine with an auto, but some of the lanes/rides are really wet and muddy and need a bit of skill/experience in how to manage it.
My last pickups have had auto gearbox but they still have an option to manually select and change the gears as you want, I think most modern gearboxes have this, Or at least my last 3 have had it.

Yes mine did too, I just prefer the manual box as can cruise along in 2nd gear just with diesel revs and it pulls along lovely. Its quick to tell you if its struggling so then just give a bit of power/flick of TCS if needed.

Nobody has mentioned a Tata Xenon yet. Cheap as chips, mine I ran for 4 years never let me down, spares in Europe hard to find but as it is an Indian product so RHD as normal, there are UK traders selling the spares. It never showed any rust either.

We run several 70’ plate rangers at work, and they are the single most wretched vehicle I have had the misfortune to drive. The one allocated to my team has had 2 new engines inside 40k, and constant engine warning lights regarding the ad blue system, it gets sent back to the dealers but within a few hundred miles it’s back on. The rest are very similar in terms of reliability.

I have a 61 plate hilux invincible with 120k on and it’s been brilliant. Needs a bit spending now on MOT but still represents cheap motoring.

Just bought 2019 musso. Very pleased with it so far, incredibly comfortable to drive, quiet and still under the manufacturer warranty. Cant really understand why they’re not more popular tbh. You get an awful lot of vehicle for your money!
A friends was really economical on fuel

Ah but is that the Ford ‘lion’ engine as used in Discovery 3 & 4 that snap cranks etc or is it the VW engine?
I think everything is FoMoCo. If it is the lion, I hope they have sorted any issues by now, given how long its been in production. It is as smooth as silk though.

For the time being I will keep my fingers crossed! :)

Got a 72 plate Hilux .
Absolutely superb regularly drive to Hungary /Bavaria /Slovakia and average about 31mpg.
Love it.

Jaysus! Thought i was doing well and the best mine's done on a run so far is 42 mpg.
Swapped from continentals which returned 54 mpg on same trip to Bridgestone’s and the best I’ve had with them is what I got last night from usual shoot 52 mpg. Motorway and A roads as well as some field work using 4 high into three fields.

Isuzu has been Good to me for the past 12 years fencing contractor and farming, no complaints,

Now it's time for something else,

Prices of new pickups are outrageous (in my opinion), so considering that, for my use, it's now

Amarok v6 Pan America top of the list

I’m impressed with my navara, seems to do about 42mpg on average.

Turbo hot pipe leaks a little oil but it’s not terrible.
