I'm driving a 2018 navarra wich i have no complaints with but is looking tatty but was going to run it till it dies however new taxation changes make me think maybe i should change now before april

Went to look at some today, rangers, dmax, hilux.
The rangers looked and felt great but i wont touch a ford with a wet belt (so i think that rules out amaroks as well??)
The Dmax felt cheap/plasticy inside (leatherette seats and shiny fidlly bit) but on paper looks good
Toyota didnt have a hilux to try but i like the look, residuals but everyone says they are thirsty as hell.

Thoughts please

I would do the numbers, but if you have a good truck that you know, its paid for and has been well maintained I would suggest keep running it will be far far cheaper than trading it in just to save a little bit of tax.

Like my 19 plate D-max use road tyres starting late spring then swap to the chunky set come the wet weather.

So many horror stories of the wet belts. And ford's lack of accountability thereafter.

Fair enough, no point spending the money and not enjoying the drive. Iv heard the stories but so far so good for me. I had 19 and 21 plate navaras before - also good and over 200k miles without issue between them, hopefully the ford is the same.

Neighbour close to me just had to have a full replacement engine, because his belt went on a dual carriageway, lost all powerm he was just out of warranty too...

Before you rule out ford ranger read this article.

The Ford Ranger tends to win comparison tests but they are comparing brand new vehicles on that day. Owners tend to have a lot of issues with them and poor dealer support.
The HiLux is always lauded as the best but spares when you do need them are expensive, I have had friends who have had corrosion issues and they are heavy on fuel.
I have run an Isuzu DMax Utility extra cab 2015 model since 2018, 2.5 twin turbo and covered around 80k miles. Averages just over 30mpg empty or carrying a load, excellent motorway cruiser, more comfortable and quieter than my wife's Peugeot 2008, very reliable. If anything, a bit highly geared.

So had a 1996 hilux, then and got a 2018 hilux in 2022.

Brand loyalty and desire more then anything and it had the max towing capacity, yes like it but - local mechanic can’t do everything needed on it so had to go to dealer, which in some respects is okay but in others they are sharks and I’ve been left unimpressed - maybe that’s the dealership.

You cannot seem to get the commercial hilux models the basic no frills versions.

If I was going to change or replace I would look at the Isuzu.

I’ve driven Ford Rangers too - like them - very comfy, did everything it was asked to do, when at work which is mostly roads and tracks work so no off road experience with it.

I'm getting around 28mpg out of my Hilux and that's mostly motorway miles, its only done 3000 miles so I'm hoping it gets a little better as the engine loosens up, or maybe just wishful thinking :)

I run a hilux, I’ve have had it since new .
if I had to buy another vehicle it would be the same again as I’ve not had a moment’s problem with it.
My boss had one before me and in 10 years the only thing he ever replaced apart from consumables was a light bulb !!

I've owned a 2009 Hilux for 9 years. It's done 88,000 miles with no major engine problems. Rust set in on the rear chassis, and I had all the cross members renewed and any mounts, etc., that had rusted. The work cost £1000, but it's now probably better than new. It's been a brilliant truck and done everything I wanted.

I work on and see a lot of pickups (off to another Ranger later). Go Isuzu or Toyota, generally Isuzu service and backup is better than toyota, but if you have a good toyota dealer the 10 year service/warranty scheme is very good. toyota genuine parts are reasonably priced and readily available. Although don't often need parts for Dmax's.
