Not another bloody smock thread…specific requirements!

Yes, yes, I know not a bloody smock thread….

But…I have used the search function extensively and done a lot of looking online but am still wondering whether one of the SD community can provide an epiphany.

I’m after a smock…

Requirements….

-Big kangaroo pocket
-high hand warmer pockets
-needs an integrated hood-not a collar with a zip on or popper hood
-long length to cover that annoying thigh bit which gets cold…

From my research the only one I can really see which fits the bill is a shooterking harwood/greenland (are these the same just different colours?). Annoying it’s got the wicking neoprene cuffs?

Otherwise the swedteam ultralight anorak looks good but it seems discontinued everywhere?

I should add that I have used and abused a ridgeline torrent jacket the last 7 years which to be fair has been great. I paid less than £100 for it and yes on reflection it runs quite hot but I have bad circulation and don’t dislike that preferring to be warm than cold.

Am I trying to reinvent the wheel here and should I just get another ridgeline, either their smock or another torrent?

Any insight or a lightbulb moment from someone would be great!

Cheers,

Patrick

I use a riverswest and had it for 12years , or thereabouts . It’s tough and keeps me pretty dry , I always take it off if I have a tough extraction coz it’s not 100% breathable. I have looked at others but keep going back to my old trusty 👍🏻

You haven’t stipulated waterproof, are you after warm or waterproof? If the former, check out boreal mountain anoraks, beware of fakes and only buy direct, I did and love it for winter stuff when it gets very chilly, awesome in a highseat etc

One thing you didn't mention is if it needs to be waterproof? That will negate a lot of options.

I've had a Rivers West and a Swazi Nahanni. The RW is waterproof but you'll sweat buckets doing anything other than a slow walk in pouring rain. I found that if the weather was bad enough to need the RW I wouldn't go out as I'd never see any deer anyway.

The Nahanni is a fleece but it is very warm and has a windproof membrane over the chest which helps keep me warm even when sittingmout. The extra length is a godsend for keeping my waist warm and bum while sitting. I use this all the time now while the RW is collecting dust.

Both don't meet your hood requirements though as they have removable hoods.

Are these really worth it…they are ££££
You're paying for design, UK workmanship and the Harry Potter rainwater repellent magic that is Ventile.

Only you can determine value for money but they do at least offer the all-important kangaroo chest/sternum binocular pocket you stipulated.

Another 'out there' suggestion would be the delightful Bison Bushcraft Jager Smock but I fear they have stopped making them due to cost:

Sorry that’s a good point. Waterproof would be good, i am happy to layer up under it to achieve warmth….

I understand that there is no waterproof golden bullet however-my ridgeline jacket I can only remember a handful of times getting actually soaked in biblical weather so I suppose basically waterproof is what I’m aiming for!

Have you got a hill trek? I have had a look at them!

Like you I wanted the ultra lightweight smock by Swedteam, I tried one on once and it was awesome! However discontinued and I tried to source one abroad at great lengths with no joy.

I then had the swedteam Ridge Pro M above which was a good smock, nice features, poachers pocket on the back too! Neoprene cuffs though and damn hot!

Currently running the Harkila Orton Tech Packable Smock, I'd say this would tick your boxes!

Ultra lightweight, no neoprene cuff, big kangaroo pocket, hardware pockets, permanently attached hood, full length side zip for easy on and off.

Not tested it in heavy rain but for all your demands it'll be perfect.

Smock

If you want anymore info or specific photos of the smock just let me know mate 👍
