Out last night.

So while pheasant shooting earlier I come across a dead lamb half eaten just in the wood so I hastened back before 17:00 hours.
On the way I scanned a wood edge on the way that sometimes holds a fox , they like to use old badger sets there occasionally.
Bugger me, just as I look one comes out of the wood and has a good stretch! Because of that I think it's only just emerged from the set.
I try to catch up with it but it's disappeared into another wood barking now but moving away.

I decided it'll keep for another night.
So I headed off into the wind and rain towards the carcass. After a mile walk I'm near the carcass but conscious of if one comes it'll be down wind so keep checking down wind from me. Sure enough big old Charlie comes into view down wind about 200 yards away.
I do my best to get out of being winded by it and successfully dodge it. I go to to take a shot after getting a touch closer, distance now is a little over 100 yards but now he is moving off to my right. I follow it but then realize it's just checking it's surroundings because
then it turns again and is heading for the carcass in the wood, to my left.
Now it is going to cross my scent so I better hurry up and the the little HMR did the business just fine. I've been really enjoying carrying the little rimfire again. About 80yds I get to shoot.
In the video I shoot 3 rounds. I knew it was done for but with a rimfire I always issue extra shots.

A fair size dog with a rear leg issue. You can see it limping in the video.

Well I have actually been out on the fox’s tonight. I never thought I would be in a position to say this, but I fancied a change from Fallow . Any how, a farm near by phoned and said , there back !! So over I went this evening for a look and sure enough they were there, 3 in all but only 1was a safe shot. Looks like another few visits over the Xmas period

Out last night after being laid up with a bad lurgy. Blowing an absolute howler here, but very wet underfoot. Had the very beefy looking dog and his mate in the top pic soon after arriving. The other two below were a fair size too, and one with a black belly. Finished off with a rat session on this and another perm, no big numbers for me though; around half a dozen rats at each site. Still feeling bunged up, and coughing up greenies, but great to be back out!

Vixen from Friday night around 8.15 p.m. Within a few minutes of calling , a large fox appeared and started towards us at speed but winded us and bailed out again and wouldn’t entertain it . So , after a while and thinking that’s that , we headed towards the bait site with the vehicle , slowly crawling over the stubble using the thermal all the while , when I spotted another that exited the thicker cover beside where we were heading. A quick side on with the vehicle and my buddy was on the bonnet with the .243 and Alpex 4k . She dropped at 211 yards to 85 grain bib shot !

Friday night's outing started off with a bit of a bum clencher !.
loads of places to go but most are flooded .we opted to start on a spot with a hilltop vantage point,but a 400yd drive across the sheep field to it.
as soon as we set off I got that sinking feeling ( literally) it was a mistake.the problem with wet grass is if you stop you're fcuked so press on and hope for the best.i managed to get some speed up so the momentum should get us through to the dryer hillside?. managed to get out and to safety ( phew ).
called for a bit but no joy so all that was for nothing.this time I could get a good downhill run and out we got..
now off to another place on a hardcore track.
we parked up overlooking the field's below,a fox in the next field @340yds and started coming to ants call.it slipped through the netting into our field and I flattened it @150 yds,a vixen .
next ant spotted one behind us on the posh drive way but not a good idea to use the farmers house as a back stopso I let it go as it took no notice of the call.
about 30 minutes later one appeared a long way off , maybe it had circled us?.
it sat on nextdoors farm drive for 20 minutes, maybe eating something but @ 560 yds was out of my skill set.
time for home for cake and medals.
not a bad night,at least we didn't get stuck,got a fox and now know where we are going on Christmas eve.

Just got home from my first night out for just over 3 weeks as I’d been a bit poorly, walked out & picked the caller up after a little under 3 hours, I’d seen one which I’d pulled the trigger on and had my first miss fire with the 22-250 I was well pee’d off, anyway had that last look round with the thermal as you do & bugger me there’s Charlie trotting through the paddock, it didn’t miss fire this time , after getting it back to the truck I had yet another last look round with the thermal & bugger me another one on my opposite side making its way down a hedgerow, number 2 in the bag. A nice last minute result, 2 vixen’s & I’m certain 1 if not both had young in them ( a bit early d’you think ? )

Admire your fortitude Smelly. Increasingly I go for the softer option.
That said Lady FB is like a baiting bear after a dreadful trip to Glasgow (long delays in both directions) so rain, hail or snow tonight……

Noticed today that this morning I've lost the eye piece off the 520. I've sent a request to OW.
Then I noticed some unpleasantness in the barrel of my 222 that needed a scrub to remove! It has some corrosion activity now.
So I'm off out to check it.
I'm going to have to improve my barrel care regimen!
I've also been out to track a fox and tracked him I did. I also found where it's fed on a woodcock!
