Well it's been a grand holiday but like most things they have to come to an end.
Today though I went tracking!
The other day I found large slots. First thing I thought was red deer!
Last night night I saw a large heat source in the distance where there are no beasts of any kind so today I went to look and found fresh prints or slots.

I found no poop though but Jess was doing a lot of scenting!
I covered some ground and found no more evidence of the beast but did happen on a cock pheasant that I put a stalk on and launched a bullet at and made a successful shot. Just sub sonic loads with unique in the 3030. A good 50yds.

Now there is this big dog fox I've been after and he keeps outwitting me. I've nobbled his succession of vixens upto now but noticed he has retreated out of the way.
On a whim I tried calling in a spot I've heard him now barking from.
It's an old quarry with a hole I can sit above and call. They sometimes come through the scrub but the wind was wrong! I tried any way and soon after the first squeal he barked at me! I paused then squealed again and he barked and was closer! Alas I never saw him and it fell quiet. He must of winded me and bust me again!
I was glad though I had worked out his new home!
Eventually I got up and made my way home.
Then a goshawk whizzed by which was amazing and then I bumped into the roe.
A buck and doe posed perfectly at about 70yds frozen looking at me.
I could only get a poor photo.

Then I came to a field full of cock birds.
To many really, the hens will stand no chance come spring!
They flew off to cover and some ran to cover.
As I made my way along a treed ledge that drops down a steep bank covered in scrub one cock bird thought he had hidden enough!
With some careful manoeuvring I could see his noggin and the 3030 spoke again.

What a grand time for a man, dog and rifle and a privilege.
What do you think of the slots?
All ammunition contained lead
