Trouble is, it will be impossible to update the templates for most ranges. There will have been residential housing encroaching on the danger area over the years and it is now impossible to enlarge it. Look at a satellite picture of the Bisley danger area, for example. Dense housing right up to the edges all around. All this has been known about for years, of course. But now, one bright spark has decided to actually make a noise about it and the can of worms has been opened....I suspect an admin c0ck up and failure to update the templates, which only just got spotted
Incorrect. All 6.5mm calibres are banned on gallery ranges, regardless of whether there is a 338 template or not.
The last update I can find from DIO saysIncorrect. All 6.5mm calibres are banned on gallery ranges, regardless of whether there is a 338 template or not.
You are correct Chris, the 338 template does not effect being able to use the 6.5’s and all are still prohibited as far as the last communication I saw. There has been a further update from DIO, will send the text later unless someone beats me to it.
Thanks.I think these are the latest hard info:
Oct 7th said:The NRA has received confirmation from Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) that, on UK DIO ranges, 6.5mm Creedmoor ammunition shall only be used where 8.59mm ammunition (338 Lapua Magnum) is permitted. Club RCO’s must check range standing orders as part of the shoot planning/range recce process and ensure compliance.
Oct 22nd said:The use of 6.5mm Creedmoor by NRA Clubs is restricted to fixed ranges with a 3700m danger area
As part of the planning process and range recce, Club Officials and RCOs must check the suitability of the range for the intended shooting activity.
Consult Range Standing Orders and refer questions to the Training Safety Officer (TSO)
Note: local restrictions may apply on fixed ranges; not all ranges that permit the use of 8.59mm by qualified military users are approved for civilian use of 6.5mm Creedmoor.
So is this self imposed by the club, or does it originate from Altcar themselves?Just received this via e mail from my club secretary. It’s regarding Altcar MOD Ranges in Merseyside. Lots of common chamberings missing from this list
Including my brand new 6.5 Creedmoor!

Hi,@GGG thank you for your question. As far as I can understand this is a directive from the MOD Range at Altcar itself.
The information being disseminated to club members by the secretary of the club.
As you can clearly see there are lots of common chambering missing from the list!
It states that any other calibres MUST NOT BE USED!!!
I have NOT queried the e mail just taken its contents for what they were!!!
I am unable to use my 6.5 CREEDMOOR at either Altcar or Sealand ranges, thankfully there are still Diggle and Calton Moor ranges available .
IIRC it's new MoD form 1931 clubs have to submit with the CCSAAF.I've not had anything from Landmarc of the MoD etc requesting a list of that sort.
All I put on our CSAAF is, "Sporting firearms (excluding 6.5mm) compliant with current Range Orders"
