I didn’t dare put this in the Deer Dogs section

You also asked about health issues - she’s always itchy, since she was about 5. Tried different diets etc. apoquel was the solution for a while but we’ve taken her off that and she’s no worse. Vet reckoned light coloured dogs seem to suffer from it more.
Otherwise she’s been a strong dog. Not food driven at all, which I thought wasn’t possible for a dog!

I think our one is more springer than cocker, she’s loyal, biddable and unlikely to leave our side and bugger off.
Sadly she’s 10 now so won’t be with us loads longer. We got her 3 months before our first kid was born and didn’t have time to train her for anything other than a family dog, which was easy with her. Starting again I’m sure she’d be a reasonable gundog.
Don’t know where we will ever find another like her, she more mongrel than most ….poos.
Lovely girl. Enjoy her.

The wife has a Cockerpoo dog. Much more Cocker than Poo and rules the house, at just 10.5kg it keeps my 36kg GWP in order. Very funny to watch.

As for working, bloody useless. Whines endlessly in the field when birds start flying and guns start going off. Totally self employed and untrainable. Having been spoilt rotten it's not surprising, but the nose and the blood lust is very much there.

This thread has given me much amusement and hope - my wife is looking at cockerdors... I just can't get past the name, but has anyone owned one of the things? Springador turns up loads of posts on the SD, but cockador/cockerdor... not one!

My sister has one.
It thinks it’s a cat as if it see a bright dot on the floor it will play with it for ages.
She mad about it, great pet, but only a pet it hates her husband!!
So it does have taste 😉

Hmmm. There's a common thread running through this err, thread where “wife” is mentioned far too often chaps! C’mon man up for heavens sake!

PS
It seems my hearing as reported in my opening post wasn’t at fault after all - meet Hubert….

Following the loss of our dear old girl Skye only a few weeks ago, the sainted Lady FB has identified a potential new hound to see me off us through our remaining twilight years. This has only just come about as a result of having a new fence erected and the joiner doing it bringing his six months old pup with him every day - I suspect Lady FB now makes it conditional if he ever expects a cuppa again.

On reflection I should have known better as herself has a habit of falling for odd-looking creatures…..
Sooo, deep breath, steady chaps… It is something called a Cockapoo (pause for collective gasp and cries of “shame” from the SD massive). When first she casually mentioned it (just after handing me an unsolicited but very welcome much larger than usual malt) I thought she said Cockatoo - do you know how far malt whiskey can be spluttered chaps? Neither did I and anyhow the lounge needed painting…
Now I know a cockatoo is a rather strange white bird that sits on one’s shoulder, swears a lot and poops down your back so initially I put this down to my faulty hearing; however In hindsight and drawing fully on the guile with which she and the rest of her sex are born with (which of course gives us poor men no chance whatsoever) I suspect she did say the C word as a cunning ploy - i.e. quickly offer the dog version as a more acceptable option, silly old fool will fall for that one.
I shall never know…
In my day such a beast would be called a mongrel or if the result of an intentional pairing (a cocker and a poodle - like really?) a cross-breed sooo urgent advice needed lads. Anyone willing to admit having one - this reply obviously by PM? Do they (the dogs) have particular health issues? Let's get really silly with this one - what are they like as a working dog? Finally, if I remove the pink diamond-studded collar and matching velour jacket which are probably Amazoning itself chez FBwards even as I type, can I really pass it off to my shooting pals as a mildly exotic lurcher?
Help!

My daughter has one that is 7 years old and it's a fantastic dog, show, not working cocker x miniature poodle, I wasn't sure when she got him but I'm a fan now. I did a bit of retrieving practice with a dummy and that's it. It retrieves runners and is great at getting birds out of dense cover but doesn't really understand why he should collect birds lying in the open that we can see, but that's my lack of training! His finest moment was going after a duck I had landed in the disused canal, he had never retrieved from water or retrieved a duck but dived in got it and dropped it at my feet. Great "putter upper" on walked up armed rambles. Finds a cock pheasant a bit of a challenge to carry far and better on partridge! Also good around dogs, sheep and race horses and has been a university dog in Dublin the last two years so now has a broad accent a bad Guinness habit and sings rebel songs when ****ed....! Robustly healthy.

I've a 'Working' Cockerpoo (Working cocker mum and toy poodle dad) and she's great. Definitely lacks the 'Run into any cover at 1000000 mph' that the cockers and springers have but as a result she's far more steady and better behaved than half the dogs we go out with on our walk and stand syndicate. She still hasn't retrieved anything yet but she'll find them easily in fields and light cover, at 10.2kgs she may never retrieve a pheasant but I'm hopeful she will when we get something smaller. Only issue I've had is she's a bit gun shy but she's getting much better so fingers crossed! At the end of the day cockerpoo's are great dogs but most people who have them treat them like a baby so then they act like one!

How did you find transitioning to game from dummies? Mine retrieves dummys all day but just sniffs game and stares at me....

The more alert of you (i.e. both of you) may remember the sage-like advice so freely offered by the SD massive on the subject of a new pet for FB Towers - good lord, was it really almost a year ago?
A few have even asked en passant whether the cockatoo has settled in all right and how training is moving along…. For clarity, HRH had fallen for a Cockapoo not a sodding marigold glove-bedecked white parrot!
Soooo after much wailing, howling and gnashing of teeth we sold the brand new cage and designer perch and got Rua - a two year old American Labrador (no I didn’t know either) and she is a joy though as can be seen has found it very hard to settle with us.
So a big thank you for all your advice, much of which we totally ignored…
