I’ve been loading my 223 rem 1-12 twist 53grain with 24.6grain of RS40 but now have 60 grain vmax , what your thoughts on loading for this ?

RS40 is ideal for heavier bullets in the 223.
I use this with 68gr TMKs in my 1:8 or 1:7 twist 223.

I would doubt the 60gr VMax will stabilise in your 1:12 twist.

For the lighter bullets 55gr or less I use N133

Really? I’ve just bought 400 x 60gr bullets .should I try 23gr RS 40 and work up in 5gr ?

You could try the 60gr VMax, but I would wait for others views on if they will stabilise, as said I doubt they will.

I'm not sure on your charge weight as I haven't used 60gr VMax before and don't know your COL and the likes. Something you would need to run through the likes of GRT.

When reloading the 223 I only go up in increments of 0.3gr at a time as it's a small case.

i have a 22/250 1/12 twist stablises 60 gr no problem sometimes its not the weight of the bullet its the length of it

Thanks I might just sell them and buy 53gr .if I had a faster twist I guess they would be fine.

Yes they would definitely work in a faster twist.

Again I would wait for others opinion before selling anything.

I use RS40 with 69g MKs in my 1:9 twist and it works well, I found the 69g TMKs didn't stabilise very well at all.

I'm pretty sure the reason I went with RS40 is that I read it is what is used for loading one manufacturers NATO rounds. You can load them hot and get lots of speed from RS40 but you don't have to chase velocity if you find a slightly lower charge that works well.

Isn't the 60 grain Vmax a flat bottom bullet and not a boat tail? I'd have thought this would make it slightly shorter and would be ok to stabilise?

Give them a go, they’re flat base so you might get away with it.

I’ve been using 24gr of RS40 with the 69gr TMK in my Sako 223 1-8” for 925m/s.

Why not just load up 5 at some variational powder charges at 20 thou off the lands and see, you might find they work ok...keeping an eye out for pressure signs of course

Possibly. As said I don't have an experience with a 1:12 twist, so added in to see what others say.

He may be lucky that his barrel will stabilise these. Only 1 way to find out

just got back from sportsman gun centre and bought some 53gr , as much as I like reloading I haven’t got the time at the moment so I’ve put them up for sale on here. I looked on several sites and it seems 1-12 is just a fraction too slow.
