I've got a new scope winging its way to me in the post that has a 30mm tube. I bought a Mauser 98 base (Weaver grand slam dovetail 48916) and two sets of rings (49227 & 49209). I've tried to fit the base and I'm about half a hole out! Currently the bases I have are Parker Hale items marked A22 for the front base and A26 for the rear. So, what is going to be the best way to mount this new scope with the rings I have? Are there a set of Weaver bases that will fit so I can use the rings I have or would it be better to sell them and start again? Any ideas would be gratefully received!

There are Weaver bases that supposedly fit, if you can get them. I forget exactly which ones, but if you do a search on here someone did post a chart a while back that listed the various compatible components.
(To be honest, I gave up trying and in the end just went with a 1" tube scope in P-H rings).

Your rear base is 26, that’s a Remington base, the 98 is 28 from Parker hale. This means your new Mauser 98 bases will not fit.
Is your Mauser 98 a commercial or military, and is it drilled on the rear for a base fitting behind a charger hump, or a commercial?

It's a Paker Hale 1200 which I appear to have mistakenly thought a Mauser 98 base would fit. I'll get some pictures tomorrow as I'm work bound shortly!
I Googled this Alan Rhone fellow but all that is available is a picatinny type rail. The weaver rings I have won't work with that type of rail. The front rings is inserted and twisted 90° and the rear ring is held on with a screw either side. I don't actually know what this type of system is called other than Weaver grand slam?

Post some pictures. Weaver's "Grand Slam" branding is mostly applied to steel versions of their aluminium products, but I have also seen it applied to one piece bases for what I believe are described as "standard" rings (which sounds like what you are talking about).
FWIW I would just get yourself a set of 30 mm Sportsmatch rings which will fit your PH bases:

I believe Weaver 45 and 46 will fit your rifle. (48045 and 48046).

(Although don't bank on the holes lining up perfectly!)
1" tube scope is an option. You just have to sell the 30mm tubed scope first!
(Which is exactly what I did, having bought a 30mm scope for my P-H .270, and then been unable to source the correct Weaver bases. Very happy with what I've ended up with).

The Soortsmatch mounts seem like a pretty foolproof way to make this work!

These seem to be easy enough to find but don't look as if they'll work with the rings I have. I have a feeling I'll perhaps be making a listing in the classifieds soon?
They would if the blasted base fitted! I've read that the leupold std bases will accept the rings I have though so that could be an option. They look as if they work the same so I'd still keep this feature.
These look perfect but I'm hoping to find something a bit more local so I can get everything set up this weekend. It appears this may be a tall order!

IDK for sure, but I think the Weaver Grand Slam bases like you have there are totally OOP, I have a suspicion that they are in fact Redfield bases, and either Weaver took over production of them for a while, or even just sold them off under their own name after Redfield stopped making them. Either way, they used to be very common and are now rare so you should be able to get back whatever money you have in it.
@Klenchblaize and @Smellydog do raise a good point though, the ability to perform gross windage adjustments with the mount is not to be sniffed at, indeed, I have a Remington 788 I have "run out" of windage with and may look for such a base for it. Or maybe I will just put the Williams peep sight back on it and not bother with the scope.....
As to the OP, I have bases and rings that would almost certainly work for you but getting them to you from the USA is not likely to be cheaper than the Sportsmatch mounts you can buy directly, plus you get to support a British shooting company that actually makes a good quality consumer level product in the UK...

None of these will ship out of country.
It was more about encouraging the Op to look for a known alternative.
That said, I'd be surprised if some vintage Redfield rings & mounts are not to be found gathering dust in some dark corner of an established UK Gun Shop.
