Sweden - Gun Laws to be strengthened

As one would likely expect after this appalling tragedy Sweden is to review firearm legislation which will no doubt place stricter controls on firearms ownership. Much of this could have been predicted especially when politicians must be seen to be doing something…
Sweden plans tighter gun laws after deadly school shooting Sweden plans tighter gun laws after Orebro school shooting
I note from the article that semi-auto rifles are still legal in Sweden and surprisingly in some cases fully automatic ownership is permitted. As is the tradition by now “black rifles” i.e, so-called “Assault Rifles” e.g. M16s etc. are being used as an example - much like in the USA where for some time similar shootings have been carried out with these (and other) firearms.
As a long-time owner of an assortment of firearms and a defender of the right to own them I still, in all honesty, cannot see how ownership of a semi-auto centrefire rifle is justified or in truth a defendable position to take - I may be missing something but I know not what. What is the SD membership’s view?

What happened to your post in a sales thread (mincer) where you were telling the op about his spelling, I guess you were not interested in buying it or did you?
Have you not learnt?

After the tragic Dunblane shooting our government introduced legislation outlawing hand guns (mostly. Now we have more gun crime than ever involving hand guns.
Typical government knee jerk reaction in order the appease the unknowing public whilst failing to deal with the real issues. Just saying.

Semi Auto's are sporting firearms. There, sorted it for you.
Yep I get that - as would many of our community. But I think we need to think about the bigger picture - how will we ever convince the man in the street (who of course is the very majority our darling politicians wish to please/reassure/appease) that an “assault rifle” is necessary? Do you simply ban anything that has a military parentage leaving the multitude of “sporting semis” alone?

More illegal gun crime, but (thank god) no more school shootings with legally held firearms by wanna be Rambo types. Don’t get me wrong, I have shot handguns in America and Poland and would definitely have one if they were legal in this country. But not at the expense of kids safety like in the USA.

Would a freedom of information request in the UK get an answer if asked "are there any new laws just waiting in the pipeline for the next atrocity to happen"?
We already know for a fact that there was in the past, there was a report written in the early 70s (The McKay Report) with the assistance of police and home office (Which has still not been officially released) which outlined specific types of firearms they wanted to be banned or restricted further, and over the next 25 years they did whittle away at their list.
Some of the recommended controls still haven't been made law, such as S2 Shotguns being treated as S1, so I would not be surprised if any more changes take place over the next 20 or so years.

The shooter had a Browning 30-06, Mossberg 12g, Ruger 22lr , + another 12g shotgun. All normal hunting weapons he got the licenses 15 years ago for the purpose of hunting. Its perfectly normal to use semi autos for hunting the Brownings BARs are a hunting model who has been used in Sweden for 40years.

I have no words.

No wonder all shooting will end up banned.

Shotguns comes from flintlock muskets and Mauser rifles are clearly military.

Semi-auto 223 centrefire rifles are/were used here in the Republic of Ireland for target shooting. There are some 38 still licensed. Others were licenced post some date which I don’t remember with the proviso that the licences might be revoked. They were, end of.
A friend of mine from Canada has shot PRS for 30 years. He has 3 semi-auto match rifles locked in his safe. They have been banned but not seized or handed in. They use Semi-auto CF’s for long range competition. You don’t loose your sight picture.you are shooting against a clock. That’s as simple as I can explain it.

As Greenmist implies:

It's not the gun or the type of gun that's the problem. As we have seen, multiple murders/injuries are carried out with other objects, such as vehicles and knives. The issue is why did this person do what he did and how can it be prevented from happening again.

How about this to determine which is the most dangerous, have a loaded pistol, a loaded bolt action rifle and a loaded semi-auto AR type rifle and screwdriver.
Put them all on a table, and see which one harms a person first
Simple answer none will until a human choses to do so with any of the above.

We had legally held handguns.
Somebody who legally held handguns shot up a primary school.
We banned legally held handguns.
It’s never happened again.
Handguns were not used for hunting (excluding human dispatch) or defence purposes in this country, they were for target hobby use only.
Derek bird used a shotgun and rifle to shoot 13 ( I think) people, these weren’t banned because they are of practical use.
Maybe gangsters who only tend to use guns against each other are less of a problem than middle aged white men with a Rambo complex? Just a thought.
