Backup knife

My main backup is a leatherman charge+ it has a gut hook which makes up for the fact it’s not designed specifically for gralloching. More importantly it allows me to also carry extra tools (pliers, saw etc) as well as a full bit kit in case anything goes wrong with mine or clients rifle or bow in the field.

Puma folder in pocket has galloched 25-50 reds per year and 50-75 roe per year for 25+ years. Never had issues cleaning it, never lost it. If I lost my knife it means it’s been left at gralloch site, and I’d find it again. It can’t fall out of the pocket, because the pocket is closed until needing opening.

Can’t see why need to bring backup of everything, for anything but backpacking into back country for 5-10 days.

I’m a simpleton though, less is more.

Hi all,

Was looking for a small backup knife that I could use in the event of losing my main gralloching knife etc

Was thinking of a folder that included a gut hook. needs to be small as to fit in a hip pack with other items.

Have seen some from Puma and Maserin. Any other ideas or experience with using these types of knives as a backup?

Cheers
Most times the deer come back to the truck with a number of knives in a container, I take one knife to bleed the bigger deer then while that is happening I will walk back to secure the rifle grab the deer cart a couple of asda bags then go back clean it out put the heart/liver in one bag the knives in the other put them in the cavity and plod back.
My reasoning is you are going home in the truck so all of what I need is in the truck.
This is all based on my style of stalking which is 90% at last light so back to the truck a decent light and home.

Thank you all for for the replies, advice and recommendations. I have decided to take @Cottis up on his offer of a used Maserin. Should be perfect for what I want and if I continue to be organised and careful, should in reality never need to use it 👍

I have different knives from the cheap Moras to custom made blades but this is sittings as a backup knife in my backpack from decades. It was made in the classic northern blade shape from a family company in finland and thought to have been used also by Us CIA in undercovered operations. Don't know if is true but for shure is a ultralight knife with a scary sharp steel and convenient to carry as a folder but with many advantages of s fixed blade. Bought my fist one when I was 15teen and this is the second (now 72 years old). may be is still possible to find it.
ps no springs , layered scales or leather sheats for blood and fat filthy. Just wash and brush it and it shows up as new.

When I went through this process, I settled on a Benchmade Mini Bugout (based on advice on here).

It’s absolutely perfect as a multi purpose folder that can live in a chest harness, a pocket, on a belt, wherever. Very strongly recommended.

I’m not a fan of gut hooks - I really don’t see the point of them.

I don't go anywhere without my Bugout, Brilliant knife and keeps and excellent edge

My main knife is from Peter Eaton and is simply outstanding, that is backed up by a Fallkniven PHK which is also excellent but more utilitarian. My backup of my backup is an Opinel that lives in my Bino pouch side pocket. I could gralloch everything with the Opinel but where’s the fun in that!

I usually always carry a folder as a backups backup (if that makes sense!) and it’s there for any impromptu field work. It’s usually always a Spyderco of one sort or another (Endura, Paramilitary, UKPK, Urban etc). The reason being they sit in the pocket really well and the clips are just right. Makes such a difference.

I have a Peter Eaton and my back up’s back up (which lives in my spare clothes and kit bag in the car) is an Opinel.

just purchased one of these as a back-up, similar to the benchmade in shape, size and lock but with a less premium steel in the blade, but i kid you not it aint blunt or soft steel 14c28n is not rubbish and extremely stainless.. around the £55 mark.

Looks handy!

I have to say I find my mojo bugout extremely handy, but the steel isn’t up to much. It loses and edge very fast, and rolls easily. So while I really like it because it’s such a convenient little thing, the blade itself is a bit underwhelming.

have you tried changing the angle at which you sharpen ? s30v steel should be fine. maybe increrase the angle to help prevent it rolling over.

Might be worth a look at the Victorinox Hunter XT knife. One handed opening of either the straight or gutting blade, both of which lock in place.

These are excellent. I have one as a back up but have used it on Deer with great results
