6XC, 6mm Creedmoor, or .22 creedmoor

Bit of a dilemma, it’s time to lob in a variation but i’m having a moment of indecision

Uses: scotland, england and capercaillie/beaver in sweden - so 300m shots are the expectation

under my bench: i have lots of creedmoor brass, some 6mm bullets, my 223 bullets are 55gr so too light. i’d have to buy new dies.

rifle: a SAKO 579

i have high volume range rifles so barrel life isn’t a major issue

share ya thoughts?

Are you going to shoot the capercaillie for trophy / experience, or do you want something to eat too?

It's real bog to try and find bullet / velocity combination that has low enough meat damage on usual / expected POI shots. Black grouse even harder since it's smaller.

I guess I'd go 6mm for England, and maybe the XC since AFAIK it has enough velocity already.

for food. i’ll boil the skull but im not really a mount kind of guy.

I really like my 6mm creedmoor. Currently shooting some factory 87gr v-max. Probably too much for birds.

The 22 creedmoor has just been SAAMI approved. But I wouldn’t count on seeing factory ammunition so might be off the list for now.

I will be biased and say 6mmXC as I love mine.

You would need to check on factory ammo availability though. I managed to get a few hundred rounds of match ammo, that I can then use to reload with.

You should be able to get factory 6XC in Sweden, might have to order beforehand though. Saving the hassle of trying to source ammo and fly with it. After all, Norma is just about the only manufacturer for 6XC factory (?)

Only option seems to be 6.8g Diamondline, don't know how that bullet behaves in capercaillie / black grouse. In Finland the enthusiasts are trying HPBT from different manufacturers, at different velocities, pointing the bullets with special dies etc. Just to get the probability of "blow up" reasonably low.

It's Norma Diamondline I have just now, to work through to get the brass for reloading

Not that it's a hardship as it shoots very well

I'm a fan of the 6XC having bought one 2 years ago to replace my .243. No experience of the 6cm but do have a .22cm which is relatively new and so far very impressed. I recall a thread on here some while ago where @Ronin mentioned that in his experience the 6XC had proven easier to work up accurate loads for compared to the 6cm and that was one of the things that swayed me in that direction and it has proven to be the case with the exception of the new Hornady 62gr ELD-VT which has proven a challenge but would not be suitable for your brief if you wanted any bird left!

All very similar and if you are reloading then I am sure a suitable load could be worked up with any of them and it would be a case of selecting a suitable projectile and sense for the purpose you require it for, accuracy would be the priority over pure speed so guess I would personally go for the 6XC but a good quality barrel and decent reloading skills should mean any of them will fit your brief and it boils down to personal choice.

I have had a 6mm Creedmoor and it was good, shot various bullet weights, accurate with hand loads in a factory Howa (I still have the action but with a different barrel and chamber), I still have the old dies somewhere too.
