9.3x62 ammunition for dangerous game

Can anyone recommend dangerous game ammunition for the 9.3x62 please? If you were going to shoot something large, thick-skinned, heavy and big boned what would you use?

I DO NOT RELOAD. IT HAS TO BE FACTORY AMMUNITION.
I’m in the UK, so it has to be commercially available here.
And if you recommend a .375 or a .416 you really aren’t helping!
Any suggestions gratefully received. TIA.

Lapua do a Naturalis non lead 285 grain for DG

I have used their Naturalis @ 220 grain (discontinued now) & no complaints on Boar, so the above would fill requirements.
They also do soft point lead stuff.

I don’t use my 9.3 for anything other than plains game so don’t know who supplies mono metal solids commercially

Perhaps Norma ?

I do/did buy Norma solids for larger calibres

If you can get someone to make some ammo for you then I can recommend hydros from Woodleigh

Also peregrine VRG 1 solids

However some countries take a dim view of importing home loads

Not sure if this helps much but it’s the best I can offer

An excellent article by Ron Spomer on the 9.3x62.

The challenge you will have in the UK is finding suitable ammunition. I would start J Roberts & Sons or William Evans, both of whom specialise in Dangerous Game rifles.

If you can err of the side of really tough good penetrating bullets. The RWS HIT is a monolithic copper so will penetrate well. Norma also do a line of dangerous game cartridges.

Depends on where and what you are hunting, and I definitely would take local advice from your PH etc. it may well be that they have access to better ammo than you can find in the UK. Give them plenty of time and ask them to get a box or two for you.

In the meantime practice with whatever you can get here.

With most big bores they will shoot different cartridges and bullets close enough that slight change of zero is not enough to make any real difference. Besides most shots will be pretty close - you are hitting a cow sized target at 50m. Penetration through to the vitals is key, not tiny little groups.

On reflection, I’m always thinking of DG from a guide’s position rather than a hunter

Hence immediately thinking of solids with flat merplat (stopping a charge scenario)

Hunting probably means softs so I’d still turn to Norma

No experience with these two makes below, other than a couple of kudu using a friends rifle

Bear claw (used by many)

Swift A Frame

Norma 285gr Swift A-frame for the first shot, alternativ RWS 293gr UNI Classic.
Follow up shots 285gr solids, like the Federal one.

Can you be more specific regarding quarry? Presumably buffalo and hippo but Elephant??

I have some of Kevin Robertson’s books and he has gone into great detail regarding the 9.3s and buffalo as his client rifle was a 8.3 for many years. Let me know if you would be interested in some details from the books by PM and I will see what I can do.

The 286gr Swift A-Frame is going to take some beating. At 286gr you have a sectional density of .305. Over .3 is considered optimal for penetration. The A-Frame is a very highly regarded bullet so you'll not go far wrong with it.

Can I get that in factory ammunition?

Federal Premium Cape-Shok 9.3x62 Mauser 286Gr Swift A-Frame is a factory round using the 286gr Swift A Frame. All the links I've found for it seem to be US shops though

Norma used to make swift A-frame 9,3x62, but they seem to be removed from the list.

Shot 2 buffaloes with 9,3x62.
First was shot using Norma factory ammo 286gr Swift a-frame, dropped on the spot, high shoulder hit.
Second was shot on a different trip 4 years later, using RWS 293gr UNI factory ammo, this one run around 50 meters before dropping hit was middle shoulder, no follw up shot was fired.

Think RWS 293gr UNI is the traditionel German choise for dangerus game in the 9,3x62.

Norma 285g oryx and fed premium woodleigh hydro solids in 286g would be good options

You’ll likely have to special order them

Call Robin at Emma Custom rifles, he will likely have a few options available straight from his cave

I think the 9.3x62 would be ok if you're shooting side on, and have time to place the shot, BUT, if the buffalo charges, I'd be praying the PH has a proper rifle, and knows how to use it 😁

I'd want the hardest hitting cartridge I could handle !

Quote from Ron Spomer, "As I noted in my video presentation on the 9.3x62, it proved so effective that it was grandfathered in when several African countries established minimum power levels at 375 H&H for dangerous game sporting rifles. Poor man’s 375 H&H indeed. One can hardly imagine the numbers of lions, leopards, hyenas, and buffalo shot off the fields and porches of African pioneer farmers with 9.3x62 Mauser rifles. Not to mention the eland and roan and sable and impala taken for the table."
