Unlicensed shotgun.

I have a colleague at work who may have found an unlicensed shotgun (property of his dead grandfather) in his grandmothers house.

He does not have a SGC himself but might consider applying.

Is tyeee a way the found shotgun can be put onto a SGC so it can be made legal to possess?

Failing that is theee a legal route to getting it deactivated so he can keep as a wall hanger?

She can apply for a Section 7 for starters

Hello, I think he will have to notify the local police , Maybe via the Licence DPT so they could keep until he has a SGC but that might take a few months, or as Tim said a Section 7

Had exactly this with a friend who had found a 22 rifle in the back of his father’s cupboard. Surrendered to a RFD. RFD notifies police who then run it through databases to check that its not stolen, used in crime etc. If the searches come back negative it can be transferred / sold to an appropriate certificate holder or scrapped.

You have to be careful here in respect of you knowing that someone is in the ownership of an unlicensed shotgun.
The buck doesn't stop with the person who has the " illegal " gun if they share that information with the likes of yourself, a legal certificate owner ad then nothing gets done about it.
So just a caution with this.

Those who have read it know!

I don’t know though. Just that it might be and that’s as far as it goes

Call an RFD to collect. The family of the deceased can sell it to an RFD and the RFD can give or sell it to the new owner. Some police forces will insist that it has to be handed in for destruction but they are breaking the law.

It's not really a big deal.
I suspect it's a fairly common occurrence.
You could do as @reiver suggests above, and sign them onto your own certificate, notifying your firearms dept of the circumstances.
Or your colleague could do as @Tim.243 suggests, and apply for a section 7 permit to enable him to keep the gun until such time as more permanent arrangements can be made. Once he has the permit he could transport the shotgun to an RFD for storage until such time as he has a SGC of his own (or has made other arrangements for the disposal of the gun).
Alternatively, he could simply ask an RFD to come and collect it, as suggested by @moeggesit.

When my FEO was doing an inspection of my security arrangements he found that I had a shotgun that wasn't listed on my certificate (an oversight on my part). He simply added it for me. No hassle at all.

I can’t think of anything you’ve missed. Here you go @palmer_mike, the definitive answer.

What's the source of the legal obligation on a certificate holder to act on information about another's non-compliance with firearms law?

Section 7 temporary license will allow him to possess the gun without ammunition. Best route though, would be to lodge it with an RFD, and explain the situation both to him and the police. They'll be able to advise how best to proceed 👍

Apologies, got it wrong.
Was thinking of "gun minding" where someone hides a firearm by giving it to someone else to hide out of the way.
i have looked through the list of offences regarding firearms and there isnt one specific for knowledge of someone having an illegal firearm.
humble pie..

Just take it to a friendly decent rfd who can enter it into their register then if the person feels they want it they can apply for their ticket or if it's not worth keeping it can be scrapped its really simple I have taken about 10 in to rfds over the years
