If only there was a dribbling emoji…

The Holts auction was yesterday and today. Generally it looks as if bidding has been pretty strong especially on small bores.

Going back to the OP pair of Rook Rifles they made £9,000, so whoever the lucky new owner is he will be writing a cheque for best part of £12,000. Still they are top quality in pretty much unused condition. Rooking Horse poo is probably more abundant

Meanwhile the single shot 7x57R - subject to quite a bit of discussion made £1,600, so a bit over £2k to walk away with.

I did look at the little 22 Hornet H&H hammer gun. Seriously considered putting in a cheeky bid, but it went for £2,000.

How does something like this work for variations

Who has an empty slot for a rare or unusual calibres just sitting there.

Does it limit bidders to RFDs only or am I missing something

Perhaps factor in a further fee for a freindly/accommodation RFD to act on your behalf until the appropriatie Variation is secured?

I was under the impression that fronting in that way was illegal (in the same way an rfd taking a deposit on a gun to secure it while while someone gets a variation is not allowed)
Only what I've been told I'm not an rfd so may be all bollox and I'm sure it happens on the QT anyway

The pair of H&H rifles in my original post are what is termed ‘obsolete calibre’ - basically you can’t buy commercial ammunition for them, so can be held as a “curiosity” or “ornament” under s58 (2) of the Firearms Act without a licence.

If you want to shoot them you then apply for a variation on your FAC & can ‘self transfer’ once you get the authority to acquire the rifle & possess the ammunition.

It is illegal to shoot them if you only have them under s58 (2) & also to possess ammunition for them!

It’s an obsolete calibre, you don’t need a slot, so you can buy and then inform your FLD you intend to shoot and have a slot added. Then, and only then, procure the items you need to load for it.

Every day's a school day...

It does unfortunately open up a world of opportunities in the Holt catalogue I didn't need to know I could buy
