Hornady ELD-M vs ELD-X

Is anybody using Hornady ELD-M bullets for hunting ? If so what are your observations. I recently started using ELD-X and am now a big fan. Hornady do not make the ELD-X in the calibre and weight I want so was wondering about the ELD-M

Thanks

I used amax for years for hunting , well for everything actually !

I moved over to the eld-m in my creedmoor and it’s every bit as good ! If I had to say something I’d say it is ever so slightly tougher than the amax but hardly noticeable

I used amax and now eld-m 140grn in a 6.5-284. Good accuracy, kill well. I also use 123grn sst in a 6.5x47. It also kills well but lacks the legs of it's bigger cousin.

I use the eldms in all my rifles shot lots of foxes and vermin and ton of deer, work fantastic, still have great expansion at range aswell👍

Have said this before on here for 6.5 cal, ELD-M 140gr and 147gr, ELD-X 143gr all shoot to the same zero in my rifle and have the same terminal effect, hole in paper in right place or dead deer. I can't discern any difference in meat damage between the M and X bullets.

I shoot 143eldx and 147eldm.

Excellent resistance to wind drift, very emphatic killers. Both can cause a nasty mess at short range.

I can’t tell any difference in performance between them.

I have used the 140g eld-m in my prc. I've stopped using them as I've found them to react very poorly under certain circumstances. I had bullets do things like turn inside the animal and cause unpredictable exits. I've had a few go in through the chest and exit in the rear leg, taking green through the lot. It was enough times to make me stop shooting deer with them 😂

If youre shooting 300 yards plus though they're brilliant

I shoot the 108 ELD-M in 6 creed around 3150 fps from memory. It does at lot of damage if it hits bone within 200 yards. However, a recent outing required shooting fallow at extended distances on open ground. The bullet performed exceptionally well over 300+ yards on deer.

To further ruffle feathers, I head/neck shoot more often than not and the eld-m works well for this application.

My rifle doesn’t shoot the eld-x as well as the eld-m

I normally use copper ammo but switched back to lead recently as I was running low on the Cu stuff
All I could get hold of in a hurry was Hornady PH which has the 143 grain ELD-X bullet (I have a 6.5PRC)
So far, so good
Reliably accurate and stops deer quickly
Reminds me of the Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet - something which I used to use a lot in years gone by

I switched from 143gr ELD-X in 6.5-284 doing 3050fps to 147gr ELD-M doing 2950

not a huge sample size of deer shot with the ELD-X but I found them horrific
The first Sika calf and RoeI shot were at over 300m but they still destroyed the carcase

The 147gr have been on the whole neat and tidy

The jacket at the front of the ELD-X is designed to be thinner to ensure it peels back much more aggresively

I personally prefer the ELD-M

FWIW, the ELDM is preferred in my circle that have used both, especially beyond 300 yards.
I've shot deer with both, mind you 300 is a close up where I hunt, but the ELDM was noticeably better.

Better accuracy or better terminal performance? Or both?

I’ve shot several hundred deer with both, at ranges from 25 to 400, and I really can’t say I can detect a consistent difference.

Better terminally, there is speculation that the X has a harder lead core than the M, which causes fragmentation rather than mushrooming. I'm not positive that's true, but my experience aligns with the theory. I no longer hunt with them, but am not afraid to use the M. The X is a nogo.

I've recently started using the 123 grain Eld-m in my Creedmoor for both deer and foxes and have shot several hundred in that time. In my opinion, they're the perfect compromise between a varmint bullet for foxes, and an out and out hunting bullet for deer. The bullet jacket on the Eld-m range of bullets are thinner from the meplat, all the way down from the ogive to the base, which is also thinner. That's from Hornady published data. They perform very well on deer, neither blowing massive hole's in them,or having deer run a long way before dying. On foxes they are not as devastating as a pure varmint bullet, but perform much better than a bullet designed for deer. So,in short, the perfect compromise for someone who wants a bullet for both, and that includes me as a Gamekeeper. If you only shoot deer, they are definitely worth a look.
