Knives in the Wild to a Wider Audience? Good or Bad Idea..?

A few of you will have seen my Knives in the Wild thread, I really enjoy receiving those photos and viewing the users own thread updates, it's all about seeing the knives doing what they are built to do of course.

I have always been wary of posting such stuff on my socials or indeed website, folk can get a bit upset by such images and then they can tend to get carried away shall we say.

At the same time I have never made it a secret that I supply hunters with knives and am proud to do so, or what some of the knives I make are used for.

For a while now I have been thinking of doing one of two things, or maybe even both, set up a separate Instagram account to show such photos, and/or a password protected area of my website, for the same reason.

Both with a warning (maybe the word warning is a bit strong?), both with information about what you will likely see should you sign up.

I am not even sure on Insta's policy on such things?

But, any thought please, any ideas?

I personally wouldn’t.

I don’t advertise any social media presence (beyond on sd) for my shooting & hunting, in part for concern of how public might react. This is partially due to my career but also as there as too many woke types looking to burn hunters at the stake for what we believe in. An argument you will never win in a populist open forum such instagram etc. A sad reflection of the times we live in, I’m afraid.

Like others have said, your (good) reputation will be known in these circles anyway.

You could have a private Instagram account, rather than a publicly viewable one. That way, anyone who wants to view the account has to request to be a follower. Before accepting them, you view their account to see what sort of stuff they post (although obviously that only works if their account is publicly viewable, not private).

Lucky you don’t supply knives to the military otherwise you would have pictures of dead people. What do people think knives are for.

I've only just seen this. My gut feeling is to leave it well alone. It's just not how the society we live in functions generally these days.

Most of your client base, I suspect, wouldn't have an issue. The potential problem I see is getting a following of nutter vegans who can really affect the number of people who see your posts. If they get flagged negatively a lot then apparently they don't show up so much?

I'd stick to the bushcraft and kitchen knife side of things. Nice woodland, maybe a fire and some rose tinted views of the outdoors - folk don't like reality these days, it upsets them.

On balance I wouldn’t. The bushcraft idea is a good one though. Maybe showing a knife carving venison haunch

I would not be overly worried but I would keep images to live animals and the woods, mountains, or more towards end of the processing process - one your knives being used to carve a beautifully flame grilled shoulder of venison.

You want to create the sense of adventure, being in the wilds and your knives are natural companion to all of this.

Just latest Fieldsports that has dropped through my door. A whole section on cooking game over a fire. One of the pages copied below as an illustration. image.jpg

Re reading the initial post people like “the cooking guild” are widely posting knives on Facebook and Instagram, mostly with videos of chopping up steaks etc.

I think a lot is down to cleanliness and presentation- think beautiful photos and paintings of game being prepared for the table rather than me doing a gralloch with blood everywhere.
