Safari recommendations.

I’ve been fortunate enough to work and travel quite a lot in Africa, including some safaris (official and impromptu). The most fun and best wildlife was actually on the low budget basic package in Kenya not the swanky Kruger experience. I would like to take my wife on a trip and wondered if anyone had reccomendations for good, but not fancy safari providers. Basically I’m more interested in the animals and drinking a beer with the guide than damask table cloths and pink gins, but my wife would like to be able to have a shower and go to the loo in a degree of comfort. I don’t really mind which country. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

I have always enjoyed Kruger !
Etosha is different but also enjoyable.
Depends on what you are looking to see !

Are you talking about a hunting safari or photographic as the requirements are quite different?
I enjoyed Kruger and had a great time in RSA and am returning to hunt later this year. If I were going on a photographic safari with my wife I would look carefully at flying into Vic Falls and touring Mana Pools and/or Hwange. The area I visited in the lower part of the Zambezi valley in Zim was great for hunting but the game was too sparse for photography.

Head to Zimbabwe - Hwange and mana pools are excellent. Bonus of much fewer tourists too compared to other destinations.

Thank you. None hunting.

Other thing with SA, other than Kruger and borders is you are in a fenced area. Fine if you just want pics of animals but as you probably realise its not quite the real thing from a wild animals point of view. I would take a look at the Luangwa Valley in Zambia. Very rich range of species and a lot of them

An example

I've been recommended someone called Corne Basson of Linmar Safaris in Limpopo Province, SA. It seems he has access to a wide range of areas and seems pleased to cater to whatever you want. I can pass you his details if you want?

This!

Luangwa is outstanding

Good evening
I was a professional guide and conservation manager in Zambia for 14 years and worked in many of the parks. South Luangwa or Lower Zambezi National parks have it all. South Luangwa has the edge in terms of concentrations of game but then Lower Zambezi has the addition of river based activities like canoeing, boat cruises and fishing. For a reasonably priced excellent option in South Luangwa try "flatdogs camp " Flatdogs Camp , some of the best guides in africa and great food with different accomodation options. If you want a good agent who works with them, try Audley travel : Tailor-Made Tours, Luxury Holidays & Safaris | Audley Travel UK

Good luck and feel free to message me for more info.

I hunted Chiawa ,GMA, next to Lower Zambezi NP in 1983 when it was wilderness.
There wasn't much in the way of river activities then., but walking along the Zambezi was awesome..
It's all changed now unfortunafely.

Take a look at Hendrick and Trudi Safaris in Namibia. They have a 10 day tour encompassing Namibia, Botswana and the Caprivi strip. A friend did the tour and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sunset over the Zambezi river is pretty magical. This is not far from the Luangua valley as the Luangua river flows into the Zambezi just downstream of there.

Excellent! Yes its changed a bit since then, still the odd landmine leftover from the bushwar and a few more villages sprinkled along the dirt track towards the Park boundary. Its still pretty wild but the game around the GMA has been heavily poached. I hunted the GMA for a few buffalo and also doing Problem Animal Control. Some special memmories! One wounded buff we tracked over 3 consecutive days which had been hammering villagers, was in a right state, i shot her in thick Kasaka bush ( jesse Combrettum ) around 10 metres away and i found she had 3 snare wounds and 2 muzzle loader wounds. No wonder she was so angry with humans.
keep well

Ha Ha, excellent. Yes i do indeed, him and Sarge. Bloody good people. He used to Hunt Lower Lupande GMA in South Luangwa, which was a stunning area and directly opposite one of the Photograhic camps i operated out of doing walking safaris. I hope you enjoyed Zambia
