I find myself in the lucky / unlucky position that I am flooding my local market with venison. I set up as Food Business for direct sales and have done ok with regular numbers throughout the season. I've picked up some more ground with big groups of reds and I simply haven't the market for more direct sales (nor the time for Farmers Markets and the like) so may have to resort to game dealers. There isn't a local one but Peterborough Game pick up weekly from around here so could work but wondering what they are like to deal with? I don't mean prices as they are quite transparent, more like do they constantly knock money for carcass damage or shoulder shots or query carcass weights and the like? Happy to receive comments by PM if that is more appropriate!

Equally happy for recommendations for other dealers who collect. Last time I spoke to Willo they weren't taking on any more customers and had a minimum 6 deer collection which is where Peterborough would work better for me as they are in the area weekly anyway.

They’re ‘ok’. Pay within 30 days, but make deductions for chest shot where there’s any bruising to shoulders, right or wrong. They do accept lead shot game. Prices have dropped to £1.5/kg for row I believe and £1 for red, so not really attractive if you pay tax on top of it.
I think deer under 10kg get a 50% deduction.

Used PG for over 10 years, previous late paying reputation was to some extent down to archaic bookkeeping but that improved significantly a few years ago with prompt collections and reliable 30 day payment ever since as mentioned above. Deductions are made for carcass damage so it pays to only offer tidy carcasses. In my experience the 50% low weight deduction applies to carcasses under 20kgs.

Have no problems being paid, always on time.
Only problem I have had is they said that a couple of carcasses I put in to them were shot through the saddle. I shoot all my deer through the neck/head so can guarantee this is not correct, but what do you do when the carcasses is now hundreds of miles away, you can't just go and pick it back up!

That was indeed one of my worries! This is all new ground for me - I'm more used to either direct sales or taking them to a local dealer (when I lived elsewhere) and dropping them in person. I guess a couple of photos before collection showing shot placement and carcass tag ID would help to a degree.

Ask for photos or video of the carcass as they find it when skinning

Had this with about 6 deer in last 4 months. Claims of being shot in the haunches, saddle, etc when all clean chest shots and absolutely no damage to claimed areas. 50% deductions

Didn’t challenge it, won’t go anywhere apart from losing a dealer.

Game dealer tax

Just remember this chaps..
Beware of where you are placing your tags on the carcass.
If it's located in a place where it comes away in the skinning process.
Or has to be removed because it's been put in an incorrect place.
Then there's a good chance it's going to end up somewhere else?
I recall bumping into a contractor who occasionally posts on here.
He was at the same game dealer as me. I could help but notice that he'd tagged every one of his fallow Deer carcass through the rear legs🤔
Now every one of those tags would of had to be removed and reattached..
But at the end of the day if you get deducted just suck it up and move on to the next load.

This is my experience with them too. Started at £2.40/kg couple of years ago for roe but down to £1.50 now
