Introduction from Norway!

Hi!

I'm from the northern part of Norway, but I live in the southern part.
I've been hunting since 1995.
Started with small game hunt, but in the last 10-15 years I have only been hunting deer and moose
I'm trying to expand my possibilities when it comes to hunting, getting to know other hunters and also be a part of forums like thestalkingdirectory!
Hope to be in service for those who have any questions and are in need for help.

Welcome aboard! Do you mostly hunt from high seats or stalk for deer and moose? Are there calibres restrictions like we have in the UK? Hunting Norway is definitely on my bucket list.

Hi!

Thank you!

I stalk for deer, and moose, high seats and permanent places are to boring for me...😉
Minimum caliber for big game hunting (deer) is 6.5*55.
Where and what do you hunt?

welcome from Finland. We share alot of the same hunting culture i believe. 6.5x55 is moose legal here but nowadays almost everyone uses 308. Has the 308 conquered norway as well?

Welcome from Sussex. Do you hunt with elkhounds? We now have two, a six year old and a puppy. We lost our oldest last year, and she was a brilliant tracking dog.

Hi!

In 2005 NJFF (Norwegian hunter and fishing federation) asked 7600 moose hunters what caliber, type of ammunition, how many shoots they used and shooting distance.
The answer was:
89% used 6.5x55, 308W or 30-06.

41,8% used Norma Oryx.
17,5% used Lapua Mega.

50% of the hunters answered the question about number of shots and distance:
1-3 shots.
70-150 meters.

I'm in my fifth year as a moose hunter.
I have used 308W and 9.3x62.
Ammunition is Barnes VOR-TX.
(We are 4 friends in our hunting group.
We all have agreed, and are asked by the land owners not to use lead ammunition. )

This year I'm going to use my new Mauser M03 in 6.5x55 and 9.3x62.
9.3x62 barrel with open sights.
6.5x55 with Kahles Helia 5, 3-12*56.
Shooting distance for three moose that I have shot is 50 m, 80 m 130 m.

I see a change in calibers in Norway.
Many are into long range shooting.
It started with 6.5x55, then 6.5x47 and 6.5-284.
Some hold on to 308W, 300Winmag.
But more are now using 6.5 Creedmore etc etc
I'm not sure if they are using these rifles for moose hunting.

Regards.

Hi!

We don't use elkhounds.
We are 4 friends that are using thermal handheld scope (Hikmicro FQ35).
It works extremely good for us in our hunting area.
We are able to sneak up close to the moose, so there is no need for dog.
But most hunt with dog in Norway.

What do you hunt in Sussex?

Regards.

We have mostly roe and fallow deer in Sussex. The muntjac population is also growing. We have seen the odd wild boar in the past, but they are not really a problem.

Welcome to the board, NorHunt.

l was in northern Norway in January. It was a great and pleasant surprise to walk into a Norrøna outdoors shop and see a rack of clothing labelled, “Hunting.”

Not something we see in the U.K., the land where “Everything not compulsory is forbidden.”

... I'm not sure if I should be concerned or surprised over lack of hunting clothes in U.K shops...🙄

Welcome from Surrey! I have visited your country multiple times but not for hunting yet. It is a truly stunning place!

Learned some new things from you already from what you shared, really interesting. Welcome to the site :-)
