futureproofing my Calibre choice

given the recent news do i need to up the calibre I've asked for on my FAC?


on a more serious note I've seen these roaming in Canadian towns and we're really gonna need some sort of plan to keep them in check, they are like a tank being driven by an angry toddler that missed it's afternoon nap

It is a European Elk in the picture. Also know in America as a Moose.
However, in America, they call Wapiti "elk", which often results in confusion like yours.

The correct term to use in the UK would therefore be Elk.

If you really want to future proof it I think this may be the only option

Any cartridge 6.5x55 up handles elk. Over here 6.5x55, 308w and 30-06 are most commonly used. 8x57JS, 9.3x62 and 300 win Mag are also popular.

A couple of days ago I shot a very large and very angry cow with my .243. It dropped on the spot. I don't see that an elk can really be that much harder to kill, can it?

(Incidentally, in case anyone's wondering why I didn't choose to use the mighty .270 for such a task, it's because my .243 is moderated, and it was one of those situations where you don't really want to draw too much attention to yourself. Particularly as I was shooting across a road. And it wasn't my cow).

Where did you place the shot?

Moose are not hard to kill. If you look at one from the front they are not very wide in profile. Its the long legs that make them look so big. Best thing to do with old bull or cow moose is to put all the meat through a mincer. Yearling bull or a heifer are good eating. I still have a couple of packs of mince and a very nice bit of fillét in the freezer.
