CIC UKTEB - Changes of Medal Scores (Scottish Red & Muntjac deer)

Scottish Red deer

In a historic decision the CIC has approved a significant reduction in the medal scores for the native Scottish Red Deer. The aim is to recognise the cultural importance of our largest native deer and acknowledge that its size in comparison to European deer has acted to severely restrict the award of medals

The new scores will be

Bronze 130-144.99
Silver 145-159.99
Gold 160+

The new scores will apply from 1st July 2025 and will use the current formula.

Muntjac deer

At the same meeting a proposal to increase the scores for Muntjac deer was also approved. This reflects the change in the size of heads being brought for evaluation, and is the second time it has been necessary to increase scores since 1981.

From 1st September the scores will be

Bronze 56-59.99
Silver 60-63.99
Gold 64

For heads measured till 31/08/25 the current scores will apply

What scores do you suggest should be applied and why do you think the current ones are too low?
It is so easy to get medals that they seem pointless i know lads round here that will only get real heavy weights done .That seems to be wrong to me. 110 BRONZE 125 silver and 140 Gold. That in my opinion would make them more worth while with a few extra point for heads that are old and going back.Phil.webp

I think roe deer are fine how they are currently some areas are completely devoid of medals where others they pop up semi-frequently.

Also the thing is with CIC they wont change all roe deer, they'd only change the British roe deer If they found medals popped higher than normal compared too other countries what In turn would just shaft us compared to say Spain that produces 650g+ heads pretty often in "peak" areas.

No doubt other neighboring European countries produce more medals than us Its just with there harvest restrictions only quite literally the best gets shot.

In the U.K. we likely produce less and lower quality because of the obsessive compulsive determination to never let anything get old or walk away

I think the roe scores are absolutely fine but possibly a bonus for age would be worthwhile.
Antler weight seems very area dependent but you can’t really adjust the scores county by county

I think Roe have stood the test of time, and a bronze medal head is still a very good animal by my standards.

I welcome the changes for Muntjac, gold medals seem have become increasingly common - a sign the quality is improving across the country?!
