Ban on lead shot what about old guns

So as has been mentioned all 70mm modern shotguns will fire “normal steel”. 2.5” proofed guns I don’t thinks so. The advice is no more than 1/2 choke.
To fire HP steel you need the steel fluer de leys hp proof gun. And also less the 1/2 choke. Having said that most modern guns will fire high pressure cartridges. Most wildfowlers I know including myself shoot HP steel through non steel proofed guns. I have a 1985 3” chambered beratta and I’ve shot loads of hp steel through it. I don’t think beretta changed the design they just upgraded the proof. I shoot a tight 1/2 a tight 1/4 long chokes on it.
Of course reproofing is an option but I’ve never seen the need.
Moving to steel is a pain but it’s not the end of the world as most wildfowlers know.
There are 2 1/2” steel cartridges designed for old vintage guns.

HP Steel is running at 4 tons of pressure. Most 3” guns are magnum proofed at 4tonnes pressure. I ran a 3” AyA Magnum no3 for a while. No issues with big steel cartridges. But it didn’t fit me so I sold it.

Not many of us live in a church SD!
Screenshot of the last page from the link to the FT article I put in my earlier post.

From the information given.
0.001x10 was the amount of lead in the water.
Say the guy drinks 2 litres of water a day for 2 years, not unheard of.
Rounding the figures up.
0.01 x 2 x 750 = 7.5g of lead the guy potentially ingested with no ill effects.

Living in a church might actually be safer!

One or two large fields on the estate has 2 pigeon shooters over from Italy three times a year, for two weeks each. They shoot 6 days a week and bring a slab each per day normally. These fields are magnets for pigeon so you believably, will give rotating hide sport daily for that long.

That’s beside the point.

Each puts down around 7kg of 28g shot daily, they’ve been coming here for 12 years, likely longer, but I wasn’t in the house further back.

Between these two fields, adjacent to each other, it’s probably 75 acres total coverage.

However, calculating the total lead shot dispersed over these arable fields, over the period, ignoring any deerstalking or driven days or rough shooting, equates to roughly 7 tons, but they don’t shoot Sundays, so let’s call it 5 tons of lead.

If you said to a farmer, I’m going to dump 2.5 tons of lead over your 37.5 acre field. Concentrated within 100yds of the edges (meaning the localised concentration levels are far higher),- the response would probably not be polite.

Are birds dying in record numbers ( aside from the pigeons being shot )?

Also ask him if he’d like the same amount in steel please and let me know the response 😊

I do the same. 3" chambered 1991 Beretta magnum proofed to 1200. I shoot 1050 bar steel and just don't think about it. It's just not an issue.

I was thinking more in terms of the downstream business and health risk associated with supplying contaminated food.

It’s a lot of lead to put on what is usually either wheat, peas, barley or oats or rape.

I’ve gotten tired of all the wingeing by shooters… it’s not justified, it’s not fair, steel doesn’t work blah blah blah…. it’s not great, but it’s happening and we will have to adapt so let’s just get on with it ffs.

Hello, Having worked on Thames Water i remember the town of Wallingford had a abundance of lead water pipes to a lot of properties yet there has been no mention of any lead poisioning with any resident

Meanwhile while said farmer has ripened his crop with liquid sunshine(glyphosate) and probably sprayed couple of times with pesticides.
Glyphosate can be traced in loads of food products which inturn can cause all sorts of health problems.

No, the battle is far from lost, its just that a significant player has changed sides leaving us unsupported.
