Choosing an all purpose deer rifle (now with non toxic in mind)

I’ll call it perfect!

I only need one rifle, can’t see you the point in having a heap of rifles to do the same job
I would have thought a Spear would be more suited for you mate

For those of us who need to co ordinate stalking outfits with the rifle I have the Creed when I have time to do my hair and makeup and the .243 when I cant be bothered

If we were all the same these discussions would be so dull and boring ..... but Creed is the way forward 👍💋

Rifle is a tool not a fashion accessory!

Get it out the gun box get it to where you need to be one up the spout and off you go you’re there to do a job not sit there and do your hair and and look nice😂😂😂

i suppose i could have taken my 300 remington ultra mag but just didn't see the point ?

The magnums have a place when culling multiple deer out of a group at range.

I use my .300 WSM on the hill as it means stuff drops on the spot if it goes through the chest, even at ‘extended distance’. This allows me to move onto the next deer instantly, when I’ve seen the Bang-Flop, and if something runs I know it needs another.

It just saves me tracking a deer in my scope waiting for it to tip over, and lets me just get onto dropping another.

i've culled quite a few and not found it necessary yet but i don't cull at extended range my furthest was 600m and the 308 dropped that fine

 If you ever saw me you would realise the irony in what I say about Creeds...I look like I was dropped as a baby, have wonky teeth, a skin head (baldness) and a beard...not a man bun gun at all 👍

Good shooting regardless.

And I mean that - my 308 homeloads shows over 2m of drop at 500m.
Not my normal bag to be fair I’d rather get close and shoot a heap

Your win mag at 500m is probably dropping 1.5m roughly depending on load so you’ll still need to adjust just not quite as much

I'd suggest you check up on that. That isn't the case with most lead free factory offerings not hitting the energy requirement due to low velocity... especially when you add in short barrels.

The majority of lead ammo I've tried including 100g have always been spot on for velocity. Even norma 100g are up at 3kfps whereas RWS and Lapua lead free seem to be around 2800-2850. You've got the CX loads which are around 3kfps but are a light bullet and dont meet requirements, certainly not here in England.
What 80gr lead free factory round doesn’t hit 1700/1750ftlbs?

I can tell you half a dozen 100gr ones that don’t
But 80gr .243 even in a 20” factory barrel will be pushing 3100-3300fps well inside

Ive checked a few over chronos along with a couple of lads i know and they were far from meeting the required 1700ftlb. I'm pretty sure shooting uk did an article about lead free and highlighted it in there too

A lot less (1.4m) but like you I’d rather get close, but bear in mind that’s 180 grain bullet compared to 150 in 308.

But it still drops and still needs correcting

I used the 168 amax (TAP round) in my 308

In my rum with a 180gr it drops about 1.1m, still need to adjust…….

Do all

30-06, 270

Precision do all

6.5/55, 260

Availability of ammunition is simply an order placed by your local shop to their suppliers

Just because it isn’t on the shelf does not mean that there is no availibility

The demise of certain cartridges from the shelves is a direct result to the plethora of devotees who simply must have the next bestest most winningest cartridge that the hipsters are promoting

When in reality it’s another “same as “

People are easily fooled by media hype and their own efforts to keep up with mr jones next door

I think the 6.5 PRC = .270, and 6.5 CM = .260/6.5x55 (roughly speaking). I’m not sure how much .260 ammo is available to order though?

I can’t really see why ammo availability is a thing for 6.5 x 55…my feo tried to convince me to get a creedmoor for this exact reason. I rang around local RFDs and asked, some had stock on the shelf others said it’s no problem to order in their only caveat was that they don’t order ammo every week so would just need to wait to get on an order. It seems a bit silly to me to get to say 1 round left and then go ahh damn I need more ammunition…

So surely, just do a bit of ammo testing and choose a round, ring your preferred rfd and order up some and then you are good to go for a pretty long period…I suppose it depends how many deer you shoot but short of being a professional culler how can it really be an issue? Even if you are a pro and like the calibre that’s easier in a way, find a round it likes and order a load in-assume you’d have a high amount of ammo on your ticket anyway.

I’d have loved to go 7x57…that was very hard to find ammo for and you’d need to reload but I can see one in my future 😃
