6.5 Creedmoor banned on MOD ranges

Good morning all, has there been any new developments in relation to the 6.5CM MOD range ban?

Thanks in advance

I've now stopped going to my clubs MOD shoots because of the ban, really disappointing since I recently got a new 6.5CM

Apparently, the reason for this is that the military are considering the 6.5 Creed as a replacement for the 7.62, and until they have a handle on the ballistics as far as range safety area etc. goes, they're temporarily restricting it's use on MOD ranges.
There's a reference to this on the NRA website.

Hello mate, well i guess it depends exactly on what they mean by "safety template", but yes that is also how i read the notice.

I am still not entirely sure that would makes much sense however, as if the ranges want to be that much on top of the potential "dangerous range" of what people are shooting, then they'd need surely more need to consider the BC numbers of the bullets allowed vs the muzze velocity they are fired with, rather than banning an entire cartridge that can have quite different loads to it.

And what about people shooting high BC bullets in others cartridges, especially ones with equal or greater case capacity to the 308 family? Are they not also likely to exceede the "safety template" then, if it really is "dangerous range" based?

For clarification, the template is a schematic that sets the parameters for what can be shot safley on a range with a limited danger area (lda) the area around the range that allows for overshoots and ricochet.

The military obviously use the standard for 7.62 as thats the biggest weapon you will have at platoon level. Which is why most ranges cater for it. They are saying 6.5 could exceed this template. Its for range saftey on these ranges as before hand you could use the sharp shooter weapon system on them. However the marines have recently re barreled theirs to 6.5cm which could now exceed the LDA.(doubt it)

Issue being if the range lda is cleared for 8.6mm or above there should be no reason to restric 6.5.

The problem is civi company's run the ranges. The army set the templates originally for the LDA's and they have no clue in reality what they are doing. So looks like the army will be going in at somepoint to hold their hands and sort it. Though since 6.5 isnt going to be widespread any time soon. Don't hold your breath.

Whilst the civvie company looks after the ranges, all the parameters are set by the MOD.... said civvie company is responsible for the safety and maintenance of the training areas.

6.5 is fine to use on military ranges that are "safe" for Sniper (338 Lapua Magnum) but if they are good for that its no go! They move at a snails pace getting the new templates sorted, so dont expect it to change anytime soon. Trust me the DDM boys are scratching their heads over this too!

Depends what's stated in the range standing orders. You never know haha

Hello buddy, and thank you for clarifying and bringing more knowledge to the conversation :)

As for holding my breath, luckily i dont have to, as i'm based in Denmark and the 6.5 is quite accepted at ranges here. ,D

I heard at the weekend that it's unlikely to change before the end of the year. Warcop in Cumbria is cleared for .50cal so you can use 6.5 calibres there

America is changing to 6.8 caliber for their Military rifles etc.
I would think that Uk/NATO would adopt the same as USA, for obvious reasons.

the .277fury , it's a high pressure round and i'm not convinced we will adopt it across nato since nato/USA relations are cooling since trump has started forcing nato to invest properly in their militaries
