.223. 1in12 v 1in8 for fox out to 300m

For me certainly the 1/8 T3, had a few 1/12 CZ/Rem700 as well. The 1/8 with 68/69gr is great on fox to over 400m. Punches through fox from any angle which wasn't that good with 50gr I thought.

53gr V-max generally won’t stabilise in a 1-12. It’s my go to bullet in a 1-8 tikka T3 20” at 3300fps 24.7gr N140 and cheap PPU brass.

Works well with a pard night stalker and I’ve had fox at 300. I like to get closer but sometimes needs must.
Mmm...53gr Vmax were excellent in my 1:12 Triple Two

It’ll make zero difference with bullets up to c55-50gr. The longer barrel might give a touch more velocity I suppose, but 223 isn’t a cartridge that needs a long barrel.

If you’re planning on handholding, so can benefit from heavier bullets (60-75gr) have a play with a ballistics calculator to see what trajectory and wind drift you’d get using a heavier bullets vs a ‘standard’ bullet in the 50-55gr range and make your decision from that.

The ‘standard’ bullet may well shoot flatter owing to being able to shoot it at way past 3,000fps. However, you’ll see less wind drift with the heavies. Just depends what you care about more.

I did say generally, there have been quite a lot of posts on here where people have struggled to stabilise the 53gr V-Max. Appears you are one of the lucky ones.

Just a quick example

They're long for 1:14 twist.
Most .223 1:12 have no problems.
My late friends CZ527 .222 1:14 did ok with my 53gr handloads but certainly showed a preference for 50gr

I have a 1:8 twist Tikka CTR 24 in barrel, I have only ever loaded 40 vmax for it, because it was all I could get at the time, however it shoots very well with them despite the fast twist, It is my go to Foxing Rifle for most occasions, I have just had my 22250 rebarreled with a 1:7 twist Bartlein barrel and I'm shooting 77Tmk's the groups are very promising, so this could be the new Foxing rifle for windy nights :)

Care to share your recipe?
I'm using 60-grain Vmax, but I have 1200 40-grain Vmax to use as well.

1 in 10 0r 1 in eight twist can handle 60 grain lead . They are very suitable for pests and the uk deer . copper means 50 grain in most true 223 chambered rifles without ( though there are exceptions) The 1-8 or i feel is the best if your going to be shooting mainly copper

I have a 1 in 12” 223 Remington which shoots 51gn Peregrine or Fox monolithic bullets well enough that I will happily take Rabbits, Roe and Foxes out to 250.

I have noticed on the range that it is a challenge at 575 in the wind. It shoots very well in no wind.

If / when I rebarrel it I will go for a faster twist so I am more competitive on the range with a longer higher BC bullet.

But I very much doubt that within 250 / 300 it will make any real world difference.

I shoot a 1-12 my cousin shoots a 1-8.
We reload the same 55gn v max and notice no real difference out to foxing ranches. His rifle is a t3x varmint with 1/8 20 inch. Mine is a t3 lite with 1/12 20 inch. My rifle is a lot lighter on the shoulder when carrying.
if foxing at night 300 metres is a long way!
You would if it was a 10 or even 20mph wind

Definitely get the 8twist

Run all the numbers through a ballistic calculator ie light bullet going fast vs heavy bullet going slower.

*** sorry ludders I read your reply wrong 🙈 no difference shooting the 12 v 8 twist with same bullets other than you ‘ may ‘ get more splat factor with the 8 twist as it’s generating more bullet RPM
